View Full Version : Cooling Kit vs. Carbon Canister for fuel leak?

So I was told by Buell customer service about a few weeks ago that they are no longer issuing the 'ok' to install the carbon canister outside of California. He suggested and authorized a 'cooling kit' - Part#C1580.2AM under warranty. He said this kit will cool down the fuel and therefore minimize the fuel leak (not stopping the leak, just minimize). Has anyone done this? My dealer said I was the first in the area.

I have a R and had to end up installing the Cali can to solve the problem. Just my 2 cents.

This was supposedly done to all or most all 09's
On one hand...nice to see the effort.
On the other hand...not NEARLY enough insulation.
I left what they (Buell) installed around the fuel pump, but removed the two little pieces they put on and applied some insulating blanket material I bought completely up both rails, from the lower crossmember up to the flat section at the front of the frame.
The only reason I didn't do that area also is because of the air cleaner snorkle sits tightly against the frame there, so both no room and really no need.
Made a basic (more thAn small, but not huge!) but noticable improvement on my CR.

I am not aware that this has been done to the 09's. My 09 ALWAYS drips after riding.

He's talking about the insulation on the inside of the frame, I think. All 09's and up came with the insulation on the inside of the the tank. On the right side between the eng and the frame/tank.

I think he meant that the cooling kit was done to all 09's. Is the cooling kit just added insulation? If so, it doesnt cool for crap!

Yes that's all it was is added insulation. The 08's had none just like the firebolts and lightnings, so in 09 they tried to cure the fuel drip problem by adding insulation to the inside of the frame/fuel tank and yes I agree it didn't work!
The bike is still badass and if that's all I have to deal with so be it.

I don't think all 09's has it. If so, then why did Buell approved this cooling kit on my 09's CR if its already on it?

Thats a good question. Did they explain exactly what the "cooling kit" was?

Insulation to cool down the fuel so it minimize the dripping. Bandage to the problem.

Just put the canister on it and be done. I did it myself, only took a couple of hours and it only cost about 50 bucks at the most to do the kit.
