View Full Version : How many times will I get pulled over?

Finally got around to registering my bike here in Nevada and decided to go with a personalized plate. Was expecting the DMV to give me some sort of temp plate to put on the bike while waiting for the personalized one to come in, but nope, nothing (got a piece of paper that I would normally tape to the inside of my windshield if it had been for a car, but they don't want me to put that on the bike cause it can be stolen). About 5 minutes from the DMV and I get pulled over for no plates...of course let off once I showed them the paperwork (and one of the cops couldn't stop drooling over my bike!). But I wonder how many times I'll get lit up in the (up to) 60 days it takes to get my plates in...

Maybe I should start a pool...it's my daily commuter so I'm doing about 600 miles a week.

I would get a thin piece of sheet metal or something like that, glue your temp plate to it and tape over it with some packing tape, and then just tighten it on with some wingnuts. That way you can pull it off easily when you're getting off the bike. It might be a hassle, but it'll definitely be quicker than getting pulled over all the time.

a plate can be easily stolen off of any vehicle... especially a motorcycle, regardless of it being taped on or not. I can take the nuts/bolts off of my plate just with my fingers, so I dont see much of a difference. I would just suggest Upthemaiden's Idea of getting a small piece of sheet metal or something similar and just tape the tag to that if you are overly worried about it.

as for the pool, I got $10 on 16 times over the 60 day period

I'm not too worried about it...thought the funniest part was that I got popped within minutes of leaving the DMV.

16 times! Damn, if I'm getting pulled over twice a week I'll take a copy of the thing to my backpack or something!

I was gonna say, just tape it to the back of your helmet.

Make a few copies of it then tape it to the bike that way if it gets stolen or lost you just put the next copy on.

I waited til 29 of my 30 days with the dealer's temp plate were passed, and ordered my personalized plate. Took a couple of weeks to get it, and was pulled over once, just after the plate had arrived at my parents house but before I retrieved and installed it.

1. It won't take the full 60 days to get the plate.

2. They can't do sh*t for not having the plate within the 60 days. I kept my temp slip with the insurance under the battery hold down strap, only had to get to it once.

3. I was definitely more conscientious when riding without the plate, cause I knew I was just asking for trouble already.

I wouldn't worry about it much, as long as you're keeping the speed near-legal. (my buddy and I were nabbed at 25 over and got a grin, handshake, and warning)

P.S. Welcome to Nevada! (I'm in Reno, lemme know if you're in the area too)

Rory - I'm down in Vegas, and I'm doing the same, have all the paperwork under my seat. I'm hoping it doesn't take the full 60 days, figured they just tell you that as a just in case.

Upthe - Lol at taping it to the helmet. [up]

I figured Vegas. Hit up Red Rock first chance you get if you haven't already. I so wished I had a bike last time I was down there and drove that stretch.

It has never taken 60 to get plates for me - usually second week it's done and sitting in the box. (I'm on the sixth set or more for the cars, but only the first for the bike)

That's good to hear!

I live right next to redrock, been on the 13 mile scenic loop a few times already, going to buy an annual pass so I can ride it anytime. Also did a run out east to Callville Bay and Redstone...awesome roads with long sweeping turns, perfect for hanging off the bike at 100+!:D

Got my plates in last night and on the bike...really surprised at the number of times I got pulled over. Just the one time as soon as I left the dmv, and I had lots of opportunities where the was a cop in position to easily see that I had no plates...

Ah cool, I just got the keys to my new house day before yesterday, so in the process of moving...which means this weekend is probably out for me. The following weekend I'm sure I could get away for a few hours one morning, would be nice to get a ride in before the day gets too hot!
