im mounting my gps to my handlebar clamp. i bought a plug for it made to be hardwired in. my question is; what is a good wire behind the windscreen to tap into for power? of coarse i intend to put an inlife fuse on it and what not but under my seat is pretty cramped as it is and is only going to get worse as i convert from an ss to an s. i have some room behind the windscreen. any suggestions? how did you route yours? thanks!

what year bike.my 09 is pre wired for heated grips the plug is behind the flyscreen.

I got a GPS for christmas and eventually need to get it wired up as well. I assume I'd just find an accessory cigarette lighter since that's why my GPS came with. Mine is an 03 though so if anyone else has any ideas I'd love to hear them. Until then I can still use it assuming the rides aren't more than 4 hours.

The problem is, unless you cut the female off or go buy a male, it's not going to work. Just wire it to the battery. Put a fuse in line and you're done. Heck, you could cut the cigarette lighter off and use the cable that came with the GPS.

If it were a firebolt, you could mount the outlet, but you probably don't have enough room.

yea thats the one.if you pull the rubber plugs out you can get the terminals at raido shack,gm or ford.put your wires in the terminals and install them in the connector.as good as factory installed.

Thanks for the info. I have access to wireing harnesses out of used doors and totaled cars so hopefully I can find one. Any idea which gm or ford plug it would be? Part number even? I'll look though

you dont really need the plug just the pins inside.i would lean towards gm newer modles possibly temp sensor, window motor.if you unplug the cover with the rubber plugs in daves pic gm and ford have books with all connectors maybe you can match it up

i'll just bring home a crap load of them and see what works lol. if i just need the pins that will be no problem. thanks everyone!

How do i go about finding out what size fuze I would need? and does that got between the gps and the positive side of the battery? electronics arent really my thing. Would 18ga stranded wire work? thats what I used on my heated grips.

Make sure your GPS is actually 12v. I've hard wired a few sat radios where the cigarette plug is also a voltage reducer an I cut it off, totally fried the radio. A GPS is a little more expensive.

My gps was 100 bucks lol. Fuck it. But the wire kit I bought has a small box inline and im ossuming that will take care of it. Will post pics as soon as my computer is home.

I'm just going to leave the cigarette end on, so if there's anything on there it'll stay on. Don't think mine was much more than stangpony's though

Mine was a black friday special. Does the job. Gotta usr it saturday to pick up a sweet 50s fridge. :)

The fuse is for the wire, not the device, so you can use the following chart

Just look at your length of wire, your gauge, and then run the the most common fuse you can find. It sounds like 10a would be fine for you.
