Today, I installed a cigarette lighter on my Buell. Now, i can plug my GPS, cell phone, other stuff (radar detector), in, so the battery doesn't die.
I patched it into the socket that would be occupied by the heated hand grips, under the flysceen.
I picked it up on Ebay for $14.99 including shipping.

sweet! that is on my list of mods for next winter.....but then i have to buy a GPS and a radar detector and such.....which are also on next years list!

I find it too difficult to smoke with my full face helmet and the air moving doing 20 MPH or better.

You've gotta get one of the flip up helmets. I've seen plenty of guys on cruisers with open face helmets smoking away as they ride.

I also need to hook up a cigarette lighter, but I don't have the heated hand grip attachments so I'll have to make something to go straight to the battery. I actually wired up some heated grips myself, and plan on removing them after it warms up in spring to not need them anymore. Maybe I can just salvage those wires and hook it straight to there. They're just hooked into the license plate light plugs at the moment.

Just an idea guys,

Instead of installing big cigarette lighter receptacles, just install small USB jacks (with built in 5v supply/converters). You can get them from eBay cheap. Uses less room and almost everything we plug into cigarette lighters these days goes to a USB converter first or can be bought / used with a straight USB cable.

Good point Mike. I'll have to look into that too.
But, it does have the added bonus of being able to start a fire if you're camping.

I'll put up some pictures tomorrow. It's a 2009 CityX, so not sure when they started putting the heated grips connector hookup on earlier models.

on the left. I still haven't used mine.

usb jacks great idea. do they come with plugs or something to keep crap out of them while not in use?

dave, does that radar detector pick up signals pretty good even shooting through the flyscreen? always wondered

I like the USB jack idea. Do you have any links to one that would work right for a GPS? Would it still need a fuse? I'd much rather use a usb cable instead of a cigarette lighter, but I don't know enough about electrics to try that one without someone walking me through the whole thing. I have no problem tearing into projects and learning as I go, but frying my GPS/XB electrical system isn't something I'm willing to chance.

I'll be the 1st to admit, it's not a top of the line install, but it works & it's what I needed.
