View Full Version : Exhaust switch question, Need help from ppl smarter than me

Intro: bought an 03 xb9r used with 14k on the odo. it came with a jardine, a K&N air filter (i think), and i have no idea what, if anything, has been done with the fuel mapping. it runs fine, idle is a little low (a hair under 1000). i ride the **** out of it and ride it like i stole it and it gets between 38 and 48 miles per gallon with the average around 40.
Problem: i'm not a kid anymore and the jardine exhaust is WAY TOO LOUD. so i bought a used stock pipe and the mounting stuff and want to switch it back. i just can't take the loudness anymore (ppl hear me coming like a mile away, seriously). i don't have an ECM cable, or the program to change the fuel mapping (plus, i'm deathly afraid of doing that anyway as i have bad luck with vehicle ECMs and the like in the past)
Question: Can I switch back to the stock pipe? Or will i screw up my motor? I know how running lean can ruin a motor and make it run alot hotter, but I can't figure out if the added restriction from the stock muffler would cause it to run richer or leaner.
Someone with knowledge HELP!

I think it would make it richer, if opening up an exhaust makes it lean out..then restricting should make it richer. It might make it foul plugs easier if your not carefull.

thanks for the reply. would the ecm make an adjustment based on the change in feedback from the O2 sensor?

I think its 08 and up that have the ecm's that learn?

I would agree that it should in theory make it richer. I'm pretty sure all the ECM's learn to a certain extent. Without knowing if the fuel maps were messed with it not.. it's hard to say how it will run. Since it sounds like you already have the stock pipe, put it on and see what happens. If anything you might be able to find someone with a ecmspy cable close to you and can throw the stock maps on it if it doesn't run right.

I say go for it.

Your advice is correct. You would run richer. Stop worrying about it, stick the stock exhaust on there, if it runs too rich you'll know, at that point start to worry about it lol. I'm sure you can find someone on the forum who lives close who could load a stock map back on there for you. Worst thing that could happen is fouling plugs, then you'll know u need to remap.

I think all the ecm's can learn a little but the 08 and newer are alot better. as far as the exhaust i would just put it on and see how it runs. yes if it is remapped it will run richer. You could check the ecm if it says for race use then it has the race ecm on it but if its just remapped there is no way to tell without getting ecm spy. I would invest in a cable anyways there good to have. If you have the stock exhaust i would just put it on. a rich running motor is alot better than a lean running one and your not gonna do any damage it just might not run well.

You can change back to the stock pipe if you want. It will not hurt your motor assuming you have a decent tune on the bike already. It will make the bike run slightly more rich which isn't really a huge deal. I had a Hawk exhaust and a race map on my bike for awhile. It ran great with just some minor issues that I later tuned out of it. You will probably make more HP with a stock pipe than you do currently with your jardine. Most people don't repack their mufflers like they should which in turn make them really loud, at the expense of hp and tq.

Would you be willing to trade for a stock ECU?? I have a 04 w/ jardine and am probily just gonna buy a race ecu. I'm still running stock air filer and really want a k&n.

Oh yea. Anyone know if 03 and 04s are interchangeable?

The jardine may be loud, but it will save your life in traffic. The cars will part while your a mile away. Like that dude did to the red sea. Loud pipes save lives. It obviously depends on how you are going to use the bike. If you don't commute, then you will be safer by keeping the stats down. Bye the bye. If the neghbours complain about the noise, they have options - they can move! Ha Ha. Just kidding.

Enjoy the bike

Put the stock pipe on since that's what you're wanting and go from there. The '03 was one of the earlier bikes, so it came from the factory running on the leaner side (emmissions as I understand). If your ECM wasn't remapped, then the Drummer had you running even leaner that. So, no worries there.

After putting your pipe back on, it's recommended to do a TPS reset. You'll need a cable (Xoptiinside.com) and the ECMSpy program (BuellMods.com) - unless you want to take it to a Stealership and pay them to do it. If you do it yourself, there's a How-to Vid on here that shows you how to do it with ECMSpy, step by step (at work, so I can't put up a link). Then take a nice long cruise holding around 3,000 rpm. You should be golden from there.

i have the muffler stuff, like the one the oil lines go through. do those brackets i posted not exist in the stock setup? ie the chin fairing screws into the exhaust?

bobaganoosh
03-20-2011, 01:15 PM
thats the chin fairing mount just pull that off you dont need it. you probley just need the rear mount that cradles the stock exhaust then some big hose clamps. it goes where the metal strap for the jardine muffler is. just look on ebay or buellsterparts.com im sure you could find one for less than 20 bucks. i wouldn't go to the dealer

Dude...Why don't you just get a silencer for your Jardine. Don't put the stock on. That thing sucks! It's a freaking tank!

in all honesty, the jardine sucks ass and is no more than an aluminum can stuffed with scrap metal. its soooooo loud i can't even hear myself think and i doubt there is any performance gains by having it on.

The stock exhaust is really heavy, but if that doesnt bother you why not go with a hawk? the stock exhaust doesnt sound that great in my opinion.

Go stock so you can appreciate the performance when you go back to the jardine. Re pack it while you use the stock one and keep it handy. That set up is worth some money. Look up the ecm spy how to and you will always know what map you are running. the 07's and earlier were good for that.
Also you will appreciate the subtleness of the stock. I don't blame you.

i may go hawk in the future, but i'm going to see the difference in stock

update: so i got the front bracket and header clamped (rear is supported). i cranked it up and god what a difference. i could actually hear within 20 ft of the bike. So before with the Jardine, idle was between 900-1000 (rough guess according to the tach); with the stocker on it idle was between 1000-1100 (rough guess). So i'm guessing the bike was not tuned after putting the jardine on. instead of unplugging the oil lines to install the rear "crescent moon" support, i am going to cut out the middle of it like so:

could you elaborate? when i was looking under there, i didn't see any way i could put that bracket on without unplugging the lines

I cut mine like that too it works fine.

You could probley repack that jardine and it would sound much better. In my opinion its a buell its supposed to be loud thats one of the best parts about it. when people here you and they wonder what the hell that thing is its priceless. with the right tune you will definitly notice a difference in power too.

loud is ok, i can handle loud. this jardine pipe is retardedly, obnoxiously loud. it literally rattles my helmet. i can't handle that.
like i said, i'll probably go hawk in the future when i have time to work on the bike and tune it

update 2:
so pipe is on, mounted up and running good. almost didn't want to start at first, but other than that runs great.
pros: bike runs much smoother over all and alot smoother at low rpms, seems to have more low-end pull (obvious due to added back pressure), some of the staggering from stop-n-go's seems to gone, and last but not least I CAN ACTUALLY HEAR and am not deaf for an hour after riding
cons: a little too quiet, there is a definite loss of power (but not bad, still plenty for me) especially on the top end (which was expected), and bike seems to run a little hotter (but then again, i'm used to riding in 40* weather and its 70* today)

I'll keep this setup for a while and get an ECM cable soon to check out the fuel mapping and do a TPS reset. I do really enjoy being able to hear while I ride. Maybe after the summer I'll send it off to get Hawk'd. Thanks for all your help guys.

the jardines really aren't obnoxiously loud. repacking yours would probley help
