View Full Version : Cigarette charger on my bike

I picked up a charger with in line fuse already attached,at radio shack today for like $7.00
I got it wired straight to the battery, and it does work perfectly, but i noticed that i can plug my phone (or anything) into it while the bike isn't running/turned on, and it will still charge it.
My question is whether or not the battery is feeding it constant power (even while bike isn't off). For example, will i wake up tomorrow morning to find out my bikes battery is dead?....

if it is hooked to the battery it will be powerd all the time.
IF there isn't anything plugged in it won't drain your battery.
I have my iphone charger wired into my rear tail light wires.
Only powerd on park and run.

Wire it to your front right low beam headlight. Then the power will cut of when you turn your bike off. Here is a few simple photos to help.
The blue wire Is from my Cig adapter. Splice it in with whitey

Then... ground to frame. No need to ground to a different wire. They all eventually go to the frame anyway ;)

Hope you enjoy'ed my wiring for Dummie's coarse! LOL! J/k ;)

i would run a relay if you are taping into any circuit on the bike unless your are running straight from the battery. for example if you are tapping into the low beam power wire i would add a relay and wire it to the battery. so when you start the bike it will turn the relay on and give your power with out overloading the low beam circuit. but it also depends on the amount of amps that you will be drawing. look up how to wire a bosh relay or ask me and i can help you out, we wire them all the time in different ways at work.

This is true. I think he just running a gps or phone charger tho. No relay needed in that case ;)

I just made a USB plug connector that will plug into the battery tender SAE connector that's already wired straight to my battery. I don't see why a cigarette lighter outlet would be any different from the battery tender cable, and they're specifically made to leave hooked up to your battery all the time. I think you should be fine.

Use something like this...

Another reason for the relay is so power is switched with the key.
Plug something into the tender plug don't forget to unplug it, or you'll be walking for a while.

So in a case like this, can our bikes be roll started?? Ive been in a few cars that cant be roll started for some safety bull, I wouldnt think a Buell would have this safety stuff.

What do cigarettes do when you charge them up?

Yes you can bump start any bike as long as the electrical system is functional and it's just a dead battery.

Have you ever done that with an XB? Damn near impossible if the battery is fully drained. You need the fuel pump to be running to get fuel into the motor- so it will work if you have a big ol hill to coast down so it runs manually long enough to fire up. Running across a flat parking lot? Good luck, that sucks!

I have bump started plenty of dirtbike but im not sure I would want to bump start a Buell...when you let the clutch out if that motor doesn't start and keep the tire spinning it is going to have a nasty skid when it locks up....seems a little dangerous considering you are going to chance a wreck instead of waiting for a new battery

yea i'm just going to be charging things like my phone and such... And a GPS once i get one.
And as far as charging up cigarettes vroom, they just tend to burn a bit longer :)

I tried to push start my xb a few weeks ago when the battery was dead, I didn't have any luck. Even with it in 2nd or 3rd gear the back tire would just lock up as soon as I let the clutch out. Might've been better if I had time to jump on the bike then let it out but I live in the city and had a limited space to work with.
If I wanted the cigarrete/USB adaptor on all the time I'd definitely wire it into the electrical system. I'm only going to use mine on rare occasions for my GPS or phone, and if I forgot to unplug either of those I'll probably be more upset about the stolen phone/GPS than I am a dead battery. Those are things that I always keep with me though so I think chances of forgetting them are pretty slim.

i've got my bike push started before. It takes a few tries, but it is possible!

I have. Many times. Also had to do it when my bike was stuck in gear. Need to get a good push tho. ;)http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/8587_20110127075157_L.jpg

While we're on the topic, can anyone tell me if I need a cable with this little cylinder built in? I didn't think anything of it and ordered a usb cable got my gps. As soon as I bought it there was a link to the same cable on that page, for pretty much the same cable I just bought but this one has that little cylinder inline saying it removes static or something like that. Should I order one of those, or will I be fine without it? I'm not really sure what it does.

I'm with vroom. How do you charge a cigarette? What does it do when charged? Do you get high like you would on marijuanna? I've heard of them new E-cigarettes that are smokless but a charged cigarette? Is it kinda like shock therapy?
Also does anyone know why my bike keeps running out of gas? Should I turn it off when I am not riding it?

Look up Vapor4Life...
Anyways ya, that little cylinder is basically a choke.
Its to stop any electrical noise, mostly for cars or trucks.
Anything with a complex charging system, ie alt.
With just a stator and a vr we don't have much to worry about, as long as ur spark plugs are in good shape.
It can't hurt but not really needed.
I have 1 or 2 with the choke in it, most don't.

If one of the moderators want to change my title to something other than "cigarette charger", bc i dont honestly see the good points of having a highly charged cig either haha

can anyone tell me if I need a cable with this little cylinder built in?
My guess is a small capacitor to keep the power steady, or to reduce in some way.
(that's just my high school education talking though)

When I first got my buell it kept killing the battery i rode the bike to work one night and in the morning it was dead. So dead the fuel pump wouldn't turn on, it wouldn't bump start like the honda i had.

I found this today and bought it. it is pretty cool because I can plug it up to plug for my battery tender and unplug it when i don't need it.

oh9bolt, the thing you found is pretty much the same idea. There's a bunch of those on the internet, just google/ebay "cigarette SAE". That's the same end I have on my usb port for my gps and phone. You can buy just the SAE plugs at any auto parts store. They'll either be in the electrical section, or the section with the wires for trailers. You can buy an extension cable that's just 2 SAE connectors with a foot of wire between them for about $2-3. Cut it in half and attach whatever you want to it and you can hook it up the the battery tender cables.

Yeah I found some on ebay I am gonna try advance auto parts tomorrow

One tip before you wire them up, because I know I got stuck on it for a while..... the wiring on the plug doesn't necessarily line up with the positive/negative on the plug. If you look at the extension, one plug has the positive on one side, and the other has it on the other side. Makes sense because one plug is receiving the other is giving the power, but I didn't think about it, just lined red/red and black/black and nothing was working. I had to actually wire the plug backwards according to the wires for it to work, so just electrical tape and try everything out before you pull out the soldering gun.
