I am getting a K&N air filter, should be in tomorrow or Fri. This will be my first mod, I guess if you can call it that. From what I have seen on here, I would like to do an Airbox delete and breather re-route. I guess they go hand in had? Anyway, is something like this difficult? Do I need to buy a kit for it, or is it totally DIY?

its pretty easy, i need to do it to mine to. i have my airbox drilled and cut with lots of holes, but im pretty sure i'm going to do the whole delete soon. If you get a long bolt you can just drill a hole on the base plate of the airbox, and cut out the top part of your air box that actually holds the filter in place. and then just bolt it down (i know i suck at explaining it. somebody will come along and have a picture i bet.

If you want to buy a kit ASB does sell one

ocroft from what i can remember you have a 03 xb right.
it has the hole in the frame/tank that air is rammed into from the lefthand scoop and already gives the airbox a good amount of cold air in a ram air effect. the airbox delete will not give any more power (on the pre 2005 buells)and will do nothing to the effect of giving you more air , like does on 2006 and newer Buells because they no longer have the hole in the frame/tank, they rely on air coming in from the very front air hole by the gas cap and around the small gaps of the cover and the hole pre cut into the cover under the outer cover.. I know some people on here just dont get that about it. it does nothing for the 2005 and older models, and in some cases it may decrease the air amount being forced into the filter, because the the inner cover is pretty much sealed and the cold air being rammed in from the scoop and up through the tank/frame and into the airbox, without the main innner airbox all that rammed air can not be contained like it is intended to do and some if not ALOT can and will escape the the small gaps under the main outer cover, yes it looks cool when you take off the cover , you never ride it without the cover do you. now like I said for the 2006 and later year models it can help along with scoops on the airbox itself would help too, because they dont have the ram air effect from the scoop because the hole is not there and the scoopis still there to direct air to help cool the engine.

edit: more info to help you....
now if you want to do something in the airbox to help you I would suggest Airbox heat barrier , to help keep the heat down as much as possible in there, like the ones at

Thanks guys.
Native: that actually makes sense. the guy i bought thebike from has drilled holes in the airbox and airbox cover, do you suggest i get a new airbox an/or cover? and what exactly does the breather re-route do, and is it necessary if i do not do the airbox delete?

native- got any research/data to support that theory?

typically when air flows past an opening such as the one through the frame, it creates a vacuum. If you look at the pre '05 bikes, the frame hole has no "scoop" to it, it simply is an opening. I'd be willing to be that if threw a vacuum/pressure gauge into the air box we would see vacuum while running due to the vacuum created there and the air being removed by the motor.

I could write a easy how to on how to cut up your original airbox if youd like.

That would be cool Loki. I was thinking of drilling some holes in the sides.

only problem is you have an 03 airbox which is different then the rest of the airboxes so the best thing to do if you are doing the airbox delete is find a used one off of ebay that goes one a xb12 so you will have the little inverted nipple and it is flat on top of the filter instead of the way it is on the 03 xb9.

I took out the rubber sleeve that reduces the airflow thru the frame (04 xb12r). I used a little weather strip around the frame edge to seat tight to the bottom of the airbox. That's about all it needs if you have the hole in frame IMO.
