Guys,
Love this forum! I just drove 600 miles round trip to pick up a new to me 09 XB12R with 1500 miles! I cant believe it was totaled. Only 2 things concern me on the bike.
1) The cast metal piece that holds the cluster and front fairings on has the right part broken off. Right where it holds on the turn signal. I have been searching all day for one. Cant seem to find one anywhere.
2) the shift lever that sticks out of the primary (where the gasket is) is bent towards the rear. The primary cover does not appear to be broken at all, it also doesn't look like it is leaking. Is this a huge job?
Any help or input is much appreciated!
I will post pictures tomorrow. Too dark now...
I cannot wait to ride. Unfortunately I will be out of town until June so I will have tons of time to get parts together.

for problem 1 i JB welded my faring bracket ends, let it sit for a day and sanded them smooth, primed and painted it gloss black (check my thread with pics of my bike to see it)
as for problem 2 im not too sure post a pic of the shifter.
If you dont have the end piece look online at buellsterparts.com they have some hard to find parts on there sometimes.

Unfortunately, I the rest of the bracket is MIA I would defiantly jerry rig it if I had it.
Thanks for the reply, pics tomorrow!

That buellsterparts sight is pretty cool. Does $135 sound reasonable for that support bracket?

it's not an awful price, but it's worth a call to a dealer to see what a new part would cost. Buellster would probably get it to you faster, but a new one might not be all that much more. You could also check over at badweatherbikes, they've got a more active classifieds section than we do, although I don't remember seeing any of those brackets there any time recently. You'll be fine riding with out the bottom right corner bolted for a little while I would think.

Yea, that fairing stay is magnesium, if it's broken on the end, it's probably broken in other places. They are easy to change. The one from Buellster parts is new. I just put one on a month ago. it's about $150 shipped. A new one from Harley is about $150 after taxes, and I'd rather support Buellster than Harley. The bent shift shaft though... That's a bit more concern.

Just a Thought,If it was me with a salvaged bike, I would remove the Primary cover and replace the shifter shaft & seal, Before putting it in gear. Replace those parts that are needed. It would be a bad day if something was broken inside the Primary and could have been prevented. A picture would help to see the area.Buellister hopefully will have the parts you need.

I do believe I am going to support buellster than harley. My local shop has a very bad reputation and I don't want to give them cash if I don't have too.

I have only started the bike to hear her run. She has not been put in gear. You bring up a good point. I bought this bike to save a few bucks not spend more that I could have bought a perfect bike for.

Is the bolt that holds on the shifter bracket a hex or star type bolt?

I think you can see the bent arm best in this picutre

Yes it looks bent. Like said above, pull the primary and replace it. I think there is a video or walk thru on here about pulling the primary.

The bolt was a hex head, 11mm or whatever the SAE equivalent of 11mm is. Gonna be a bit challenging if you don't have a welder as it's locktited in.

Yikes. Maybe I will take my dremil tool to it and make it a flat head

I'm fairly confident they're Torx bits. Go to your local auto part store and pick up a set of Torx head sockets. It'll cost you $10, and you wont have to ruin bolts on your bike.

Just went to the dealer for some hard wear. Turns out it is a regular old bolt w/ some lock tight

Buellster has the fairing stay. Atleast they did a few months ago when i waslooking for one. Iirc they had a used one for $75. If you don't see one there you can always call and/or email and if they don't have one they'll more then likely keep an eye out for one for you. Also check the vendor list on here. Lots of websites. Buellparts.net. americansportbike.com ect ect.

Good luck brother and welcome to the family.

I know I am in love with the white and blue!

Would anyone by chance know if there is a write up on R&Ring the shifter shaft (not the right term I am sure) that is coming out of the primary?

order part
#34014-02a shift lever assembly
you will need to pull primary then you should be able to get to it if i remember correctly it.s a tight fit behind the clutch basket. if you can't roll it out from behind the flywheel you'll have to pull clutch basket and main motor sprocket with primary chain in order to get to it

Is the PN 34014-06A ? That is one one I ordered from the dealer.

Do i need any other gaskets besides the one for the primary and the one that seals that shaft?

Not sure where you are but there is a complete fairing and stay on craigslist here in Chicago for $250. That included the stay, plastic fairing, lights and everything. Not sure if you need any of the other parts than the stay but it seemed like a pretty good deal for all that stuff.

04-05-2011, 07:54 PM
Yea, I'd been looking at that for some time. I needed the stay and the headlight mounting plate... Thought about buying it and parting the rest but ended up just buying the stay from Buellster.

squidbuellie

honestly i would reuse the primary gasket and if the shaft seal is not ripped and still pliable.
and to save yourself some money you can buy a $3 plastic cutting board and cut it into a step to use as a wedge to remove the clutch basket

oh yeah almost forgot.. but i noticed that the clutch cable is ground up. if its ground to the cable you will need to replace it too.

Is that all thats wrong with it? Did it get new plastics or are they scratched to hell? More pictures. And if you dont mind me asking, how much did you pick it up for?

jakestolar

Jeepin, Thanks for the heads up. I already bought the faring stay sadly..

Squid, Great Idea! The rash on the clutch cable isnt even through the plastic so that saves me a few bucks. But speaking of clutch cables anyone ever switch to hydraulic? I did already pick up the new gaskets. Just wanted to make sure that they were the only ones I would run into

Loki, Those are the only mechanical issues. Hopefully nothing else rears its ugly head once I fix her up. I dont have any new plastics. I am actually not worried about them at all. They dont bother me yet. I might see if I can repair and paint them a little later down the road. Unless I see a great deal on some used ones. I will post more pictures when I get a chance. But the current out look isnt until this summer. I am away on business. I picked it up for 4k. I think it is a pretty great deal. $500 in parts and I got myself and 09 Buell XB12R w/ 1500 miles for $4500
