In case you were wondering, P90X (If done right) and motorcycles do not mix.....lol. I could barely bring my arm to my face let alone ride a motorcycle for the first week. In case any of you were wondering.......[cool]

I've done P90X, found it not that challenging but not easy either ;)
it is an efficient program for those just starting out or for the typical gym rat who is sick of 3 sets of 10 mentality and are wanting to do something a little different
;)

btw claytucc, not trying be a dick but health/fitness it's what I do for a living
:)

keep up the effort, its well worth it [up]

claytucc, I've never done P90X before, but for the longest time I didn't have a car, I just had my bike, and I'd go to work, hit the gym, and ride 30 miles home.

One day, after doing squats, lunges, calf raises. I'm riding home, and went to put my leg down at a light and felt like my legs were wet noodles.

P90X is great for adding variety, as well as coupling with some high intensity training with the insanity program. Personally, I prefer the combination of the two and create my own personal monster workouts :).

Get a post-workout shake so you're not so sore after a workout and you'll be ready to go out riding no problem!

How do you feel about the insanity program there Drill Sgt?

well if you put in the effort you'll get results, imho Insanity is more based on building your endurance, whereas I've seen people attain more 'muscularity' on P90X

Nothing negative to say aboot either and like any fitness program, if your goal is to get your 'abs' showing then how and what you eat go along way, typically as humans we need to get our body fat down to 10% or less unless your genetically gifted.

I also enjoy CrossFit, powerlifting and other sports to keep myself healthy and as Elliot wisely posted

the combination of the two and create my own personal monster workouts .

In my professional experience I have found this to be the most benifical because you learn how to train yourself and with the amount of info available online it only takes your own creativity and desire to challenge yourself to come up with programs that are truley sadistic (if you like that sort of thing).

My opinion on supplements is this...
a good multivitamin as well as a whole food diet works wonders, (the statement 'you are what you eat' is so true, you eat **** and feed the machine that crap and guess what??)

one thing I recommend post work out is L-Glutamine, it helps with repair and recovery and that is the only thing I take, 5grams post work out and another 5g before bed, it really helps with the above mentioned muscle soreness (most protien powders have a proprietary blend of 'stuff' in it, rant continues below on that, LOL)

The doc 'Bigger, Stronger, Faster' is online I do believe in 11 parts, part 9 is my fav, it shows how sketchy the supplement industry is and is worth a peruse, regardless if your new to fitness or not.

As for pre workout drinks, creatine, etc, etc..
there is no need to waste your money, hells the years spent reading Flex, or Musclemag or the many other muscle mags and trying the latest greatest drink, bar, powder, what have you could have bought me another Buell or two.

My fitness guru is a guy named Ross Enamiat of Rosstraining dot com, fantastic person who you can reach out too and is more then willing to answer any questions, his training is what inspired me many years ago and changed me from being a gym rat to someone who's mantra is 'your first wealth is your health, invest wisely' as wll as 'train HARD & train SMART' kinda guy that I've been able to build a business off of.

If your interested in exercising the most important muscle here are a few links, the first one is a very good read ;)

I agree completely with what Buddha says.

However, for someone with limited time, P90X, Insanity and like programs are good. I work about 60 hours a week, coach several kids sports, etc. So time is very limited and important to me. With that said, I have completed P90X and am in my 5th week of Insanity. And for someone like me, they are very effective and quick workouts. I have seen decent results and there is no driving to the dreaded gym or gym payments.

Just my .02 cents.

Swimming. I can't run or do any exercise involving impact on my feet. Another point of degenerative osteoarthritis due to an old injury. Had on surgery already. The doc cut off my big toe and screwed it back on.
Swimming and cycling. But I can't ride a bicycle for long for the same reason I can't ride my Buell for long.
Limited walking too as it is also impact. I am effing falling apart.
I need to get up to 2 miles in the pool plus weights.

That injury is unfortunate fishgutz. I love to work in plyometrics with my workouts, as well as sprints and hills, unfortunately they can be rough on a leg injury.

Best of luck to ya in workin through it!

Buddha obviously knows what he's talkin about. Some great advice there! I feel a little different about supplements but I have also done a lot of research on the ones that I do take.

In regards to 03Firebolt9R, be creative man! I think there's no better feeling than creating your own workouts that kick your ass every once in awhile. I make my workouts between 20 minutes (yes, 20 minutes) and 60 minutes. (Sprints and hills will kill ya!)

Just my input... :)

Cool thread!

I've only got a couple weeks left of P90X.

It's definitely not a fake infomercial. It's the real deal, and I am in the best shape I've been in since high school! ('80s)

Every day when I take off my shirt to jump in the shower, I look in the mirror and think "who the hell is in my bathroom...oh, that's ME" [cool]

Buddha, any suggestions for maintenance once I'm done? Could I cut down to working out every other day or something similar? Working 10-11 hour days and P90X has made the workweek tough, hoping to balance that out a bit.

The only real problem I have with P90X is occasional knee pain, I have adult Osgood-Schlatter. Some of the workouts can aggravate my condition.

What would you all say is a good program for someone that hasn't been to a gym in 5-6 years, sits at a desk, or in meetings 10hrs a day, usually 6 days per week? I know I'm in the worst shape of my life, to the point I don't work out because I'm too out of shape and tired all the time! Frustrating downward spiral.
Been thinking about a personal trainer that's down the street, mostly because if I'm spending good money on it, I'll do it. Joe Grasso....trained Cain Velasquez of the UFC I guess. Not cheap though.

How do you guys get motivated?

Yeah, I plan to after my wife and I finish Insanity. There are certain workouts that I like better than others in both of the programs, so I plan to mix em up. I too love doing plyo. And my knees hurt at first too when starting these programs but once the muscle starts to build up around your joints, they will feel better and better as you progress.

08levin check out the links that Buddha posted. Bodyweight exercises are completely underrated. Start off with a routine doing squats, lunges, hill climbs, sprints, pushups, pullups, and core exercises. Mix and match for some great workouts that don't take a whole lot of time. Also, if you search around there are plenty of sites that show you tons of variations on all of the above workouts to mix it up.

Check out P90X or also Mark Sisson has written some good stuff.

As for motivation, just do it man. Set an attainable goal and get to it! Don't forget about nutrition either, definitely an integral part to getting into shape and feeling healthier.

Try writing down everything you eat or drink for a few days, you might be surprised! I was and have done some pretty drastic changes to the way I eat.

Good Luck!

GIGO(garbage in garbage out)- Applies to the human body as well as computers. 1.5 years ago I was approaching my 45 birthday and my body felt like I was 55. My goal of 175# is now within reach and I'm physically in better shape than I was 10 years ago(and 50#s lighter). All I have been doing is eating healthier and stretching/bodyweight exercises for 30-45 min a day. Once you get a routine the results start coming quickly. I have noticed that I can spend a lot more time on Bruiser before I start cramping or getting uncomfortable.
If a lazy **** like me can do it anyone can! Raz

I feel a little different about supplements but I have also done a lot of research on the ones that I do take

my apoligies if I seemed to generalize aboot the supplement industry, since I stopped using those products there have been many new ones introduced (like anything) and as you pointed out, you've done the research but with that being said, if you look at the history of strength/conditioning and powerlifting back in the day they ate food, plain and simple.

The cost of using supplements may make it too damn expensive for alot of people considering the raising cost of food, it may not be an option.

Swimming. I can't run or do any exercise involving impact on my feet.
good for you for making the effort fishgutz, might I also suggest yoga to compliment the swimming.

Elliott once again has hit the nail on the head, the only thing I could suggest is what he mentioned aboot the links I posted, its amazing what you can do when you set your mind to it ;)

A sample workout from Rosstraining is the 'deck of cards'
each of the suites would be an exercise i.e.
hearts=pushups
spades=pullups
diamonds= airsquats
clubs= a core exercise
everytime you flip the card you do whatever exercise the suite stands for the value of the cards is how reps you'd do...
you'll blow thru a deck of cards in minutes if you put your mind too it and in a very short time you've accomplished a whole body workout.
[smirk]

Some of you know that I like to play with and use as my fitness tools items such as large tractor/heavy equipment tires, kegs filled with various amounts of water (slosh kegs), sledges in different weights, ropes for climbing (or rope waves) slosh pipes (what an evil, evil training tool but so delightful), sandbags of various weights, tires for tossing..the list goes on.

As I've mentioned low tech=hi effect, we don't have to get fancy or have a fully stocked gym to be healthy & fit.

Books like 'Infinite Intensity' and 'Never Gymless' are gold in my humble opinion and if you have the space then these types of toys are cheap to get or make on your own.

If you have the luxury of being able to use a gym then by all means do so but compliment what you do by 'thinking outside the box'

08levin, if you get the chance and can afford it, hiring a P/T is a good thing, sounds like you have an oppurtunity right down the street.
For anyone else thinking of going that route, make sure the trainer is not some guy with bug muscles in a tight shirt spewing rhetoric or saying you need to take this or that, the K.I.S.S. method works wonders when we train AND change up what your doing ever couple of weeks (muscle confusion principle) as our bodies easily adapt and within a few weeks it'll know that you expect it to lift whatever weight, x amount of times followed by a break then heading to machine 'a' to...
you get the point
;)

here is a link to the business I ran when I lived on Vancouver Island, there are alot of vids on there to give anyone ideas, please feel free to help yourself.

CBi, swimming is your joints best friend if its something that is available, might I also suggest something along the lines of MSM/Glucosamine and Chondroitin to help with the O-S, as well as jello or rather gelatine.

knowledge is power brothers and the most important muscle to use is the one between your ears.

Wow, look what I started. This thread might even compete with the porn thread.....lol

Well background about me. I do and have worked out for a long time now. I consider myself to be in great shape. I am 5'11" 200 pounds with 9.5% body fat (which has been slowly going up since I started my Master's Degree).

With that said, I have found that P90X has a much more fluid and dynamic approach to exercising. If you are looking to be in the best overall shape with the least amount of time this is a great program. As I get older, the thickness of my arms and chest become less important and my overall fitness become more and more important.

I had been going to the gym so long that no matter what exercise I could come up with, I would have little to no soreness (soreness is good). The P90X has worked different muscle groups than I normally work out as well.

I also work in a profession where my fitness is vital and have taken numerous college and professional courses in nutrition in both my previous Army career and my current job.

If you are looking to reduce fat and eat healthier or simply looking for a quick idea on what to eat and when, a great book to start off with is the "Abs DIet" by David Zinczenko. It is a crash course...but it is an easy read. It even has recipe's in it. There are many other books in that same series as well.

I also, us the L-Glutamine both pre and post workout. That and a high quality whey protein. Make sure you find one that has no other additives. A lot of them put Creatine and other supplements in the mix.

Back to my original point with the initial post. Almost every workout will yield what you put into it. With P90X, I held nothing back and then gave a little more (trust me, my body is telling me this too).

Hope this helps some of you......

Cheers

P90x "isms" have become a daily part of life for my wife and I. We quote/reference all the time. It's hard not to...you see/hear them every single day for 3 months!

Buddha, thanks for the advice, I'm going to look into the suggestions for the OS.

Budda, I woulda guessed you were a crossfit/gym jones type exercise kinda guy. All the stupid fit military guys went that way awhile ago. I don't like pain, I stick to running personally. As long as you never stop running you won't die I figure. For those of you that want a guaranteed plan to lose weight, less than 2000 calories a day and running 6-10 miles will have you losing like your in a prison camp. This is not recomended and it took me being on rations to accomplish. One of the most unhealthy things I have ever done, but I wasn't giving up my running at the time.

I love p90x and insanity but I only use it as a mixer. Mostly gymnastic rings, kettle bells and 5-10k training program plus mountain biking that I recently threw in. I do the p90 or Insanity when the weather is bad out and I want to stay indoors or I'm bored. Good program though a buddy of mine has lost 25 lbs in 10 weeks on it.

The military guys that live to exercise, jumped on the crossfit bandwagon. It isn't a bad thing, I'm just guessing it is a fad that will give way to something else eventually.
