xb12Ss mod for better breathing?

my xb12Ss is stock..that is it has the pipe and chip..but i am guessing a charcoal filter and other smog junk to choke it off.
what do you guys usually do to make these babies breath and get more hp?
it scoots ok now..but i suspect it could be much better.

open airbox mod, aftermarket exhaust, k&n air filter, and an ecm tune are standard for most people on the site. Search around there is plenty of info and threads on these topics.

i assume you have already reached in to the air scoop and pulled out the air restrictor Correct? if not put your hand in that air scoop (or if your hand won't fit tell your gf) to reach in and pull out the rubber insert in there. go for about 3 short trips to allow the computer to teach itself and you should have a big difference.
