So check engine light came on and i took it to harley see why. they came up with fault code 36 which is the fan control circuit high code. i checked the fuse its good. recently the fan has been loud and crackly, like the bearings in it are going bad or something. is there something specific i should look at or do i just need to replace it? i don't have a ecm spy cable.

whats curious tho is that after riding home from the dealership, approx 5-7 miles the fan didn't come on and the light would come on for a little bit, then shut off for a while then come back on. when i got home i turned off the bike for a couple min and turned it back on. the light came on for 8 seconds then shut off. according to the manual, if i read correctly, that means its a historic code and not a current problem.

in the historic codes it had code 53, which is ECM ROM Failure, as well as repeated the fan control code. so im a little confused on what to do and didnt want to pay 85 bucks an hour.

suggestions?

thanks in advance!!

At $85/hour, they bring several things to the table - Digital Technician, breakout box, multimeter, and a service manual bubble chart. A good tech should be able to diagnose this within an hour.

Shotgun approach - check all wiring, specifically grounds. Replace fan. Replace ECM.

fan is pulling to many amps either because something is stuck in it,motor is bad or bearings.replace it.if the fan has been bad long enough it can harm the ecm.replace the fan then retest for code 53.diagnostic manual says replace ecm for codes 52,53,54 and 55 no diag just replace.but ive seen ecm failure codes being caused by other circuits.

yea, i just went out and ran it to see if the fan would kick on and it didnt. nothing is stuck in it because it moves when i touch it so i am just going to replace it.

as far as the ECM, the 53 coded is in the historic section. so would that mean its already been replaced by the previous owner, or was just a fluke?

so i can tell that i need to remove the shock to get to the fan, but what i cant tell is if i have to remove the whole tail section. do i?

thanks

fans are the same from 03-10.you dont need to pull the whole tail section.i wouldnt worry about the 53 code until your done with the fan it may be related to the fan pulling to many amps and effecting that part of the ecm circuit.what year is your bike

the grate is removable its held on by the bolts that hold the fan on.im guessing the ebay one is used.

yes it is used, would that make you nervous enough not to use it? i am deff strapped for cash, especially since i will need to pay someone to install it since i have no way of supporting the rear while the shock is removed.

i might risk it for 20 or 30 bucks any more than that i would go new.you can use ratchet straps to hold the bike up if you can attach them to a garage celing

to remove fan disconnect neg cable, remove shock, remove fan bolts, rotate fan clockwise, disconnect fan plug.if i remember right you dont need to fully remove the shock

Nothing to attach to in the garage, no rafters or anything. just a flat ceiling, not much different than inside the house.

I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out a way to do it at home, but am coming up short. there's a suspension guy pretty close that set up my suspension. i might give him a call, he must have a way of replacing shocks and supporting the bike, hopefully he will help.

I've got the buell race exhaust. i talked to the suspension guy i mentioned and he suggested two jack stands under the foot peg mounts, might see if i can find a pair.

ordered a fan for 45 shipped, hopefully it will solve everything.

Two pieces of flat bar Steel 12inches long each by 1/4 inch Thick will work,a small slice through the ceiling and put a Bolt completely through it with large washers to the Lower Truss area.Kinda Like your garage door opener is mounted. Make sure to drill your holes before you do for ease of install.A small pin or pad lock through the Rotor Vent and up against the Caliper so Front won't try to walk/roll. Good Luck on the Fan.
