How long do the stock pads usually last? I am at 4400 miles and my front brake is starting to pulse alittle (not too bad) and the pads look very low.
I read that Lyndall Gold+'s are the ticket to the cure? I guess i should do front and rear at same time.
I just changed my oil, and if I do the brakes myself, when i bring it in for the 5k service, it will be cheap. Are Brake pads difficult to replace? I am worried about the tools I have (all metric cuz of my vdub) Is that 99.00 tool kit any good?
Thanks for any info,
Mike

the pads were easy I bought a set of EBC and think that they are ok I only used two allen heads and a piston tool. in all it took about 20 min . the hardest part of the job was that i dint rotate the wheel so that the caliper was in between the spokes.

if you just use the bike for commuting and normal riding, the lyndall, although a very good product, might be a bit over the top.
get sintered pads like ebc, ferodo, etc
if you do the occasional offroad, cm44 sintered is your best choice...they act better in muddy conditions ;)
for agressive street riding, you're better of with the cm55 pads and for street with the occasional trackdays, get the cm66. ;)

What are some sources for the EBC pad's ? I must have put on the wrong glasses today but I can't seem to find them anywhere for the Uly. I put a set of EBC pad's on my truck about a month ago and I'm impressed with them. Also read that good pad's will bring the rear brake from decorative to functional.

here's a link from the ebc website.
just put in your location and it will show you the closest dealers: click (http://www.ebcbrakes.com/asplocator/usamotorcycle.asp) ;)

After looking for ebc pads and failing to find them, and finding STOCK pads (instock at dealer @ 61.40),....
I got my order in at ASB (http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-catshow/XB12X.html) in time today before they go on vacation:
-Gel Thick Handlebar Grips
-Aprilia Tuono Mirrors
-CM55 front pads
Hopefully the pulsing stops with the pads and the mirrors are suppossed to be a huge improvement,

Pads won't be stopping your pulsing problem.....

yea I know it does sound illogical...but a few folks say it did help thiers,...but then again, those folks bought the Lyndalls (along with a thorough cleaning) ....worth a shot imho.

I installed the Aprilia Tuono Mirrors and must say its a HUGE improvement. If 10 is perfect (w/barends) these are 8 (without barends) and the originals would be a 4!! (IMHO)
I am gonna wait till my 5k service to have the rotor looked at before I install the pads.

I don't think that's accurate at all on the Lyndall Gold pads. The Lyndall pads have a progressive feel, tend provide smoother braking with little to no pulsing at all, long life, easy on the rotor, and don't do well under excessive heat (ie pushing them hard) So they should make for a great street pad for someone who is going to cruise around town and hit the occasional twistie road.
The sintered pads have a shorter life, harder on the rotor, grab better for 2 finger braking, and don't fade as the temp rises making them a better choice for hard riding.
I just ordered a new set of front pads and went with the EBC HH because I got them cheap. My preferred choice would have been Ferodo as I have used the brand with good results on many different vehicles, but all three sintered pads (CM55, EBC HH, & Ferodo)shouldn't be much different...

Are these good brakes? I thought for the price they seem pretty good.

Hi XB12Xmike Can you please post a pick of the mirrors that you changed on the bike. I would love to see. And the grips if you can. Thanks Morne
P.S. I think your pulsing lever is from a warped disc i had the same problem

can pulsing be caused from oil on the brake pads. My fork seal was leaking but since ive done a rebuild the pulsing hasnt been as bad but it is still there.

Generally, it's from a warped rotor.

Just picked up some new pads, and appears that the allen head is not a common size, at least not in my two sets. Anyone happen to know the size of the allen screw?

Hello!
Does this "don't do well under excessive heat" concern emergency braking in street use? Occasionally happens when "cruising around town"... Those Lyndalls are a real bargain if you read their description at lyndallbrakes.com )
Well, if somebody sees this ancient thread...

the lyndall golds suck imo. the progressive feel translates into little to no initial bite and you need to really pull to stop, then the next time you pull they have faded. i dont know how they advertise no dust, they were awful in that department too. the ebc double h or hawk hh are the way to go. much better initial bite, less dust, and less resistant to fade.

mike: like kona said the EBC HH pads front and rear are the way to go. i sell them to members all the time. your cost is $82 including freight for both front and rears and $3 insurance on shipping. $85 total. sometimes you can get away with de-glazing the front rotor if you feel comfortable doing it. if not, have someone help you. the rotor bolts can be a bit tricky and tight to remove without correct tools. contact me below if you want the pads.

Thank you! Locally they are 60$ front only, but i discovered where to get them at any time.
Is there big difference in brakes between Firebolt and Uly?
Got Lyndalls waiting to cure (maybe) the pulsation, but now they disappoint me. It becomes too expensive to experiment if you have to buy originals for 120$+ afterwards.
I was told that EBCs don't work well in rain. Is that true?

they worked great for me in the rain. i swithced to the ebc pads with in the first couple of months of getting the bike they have performed well at 105 deg,10 deg rain or shine.

Will these be FA345? http://www.drivebike.ru/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/maintanance/images_big/FA345HH_01.jpg
They seem (similar on pic) to be invoked in a trouble here http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Buell-Firebolt-XB12-XB9/EBR-Racing-Rotor/2/ I ordered that disc too, but without EBR pads. "Now i'm nervous"
By the way, what is that thin steel plate used for? http://ebcbrakes.com/site/wp-content/uploads//double-h-pads.jpg Is it neccessary? No third side pad set is equipped with that. I had to put these on Vesrah from my original pads.
or here same pads..

I've ordered SBS ceramic brake pads since it looks like ceramic brake pads increase brake disk life time.
