so when i shift hard into second i get a clunking noise it must be the gear so im just trying to get a feeling on price of replacing the gear and also the difficulty of the work

XB? i would thoroughly check the clutch and shift linkage before i delve into trans work. if you must yank the trans components, get a factory service manual or download it.

Have you checked you primary chain tension? I just did the 15k service on my bike and the primary was very loose, was getting a significant clunk when shifting...tightened it up to the proper specs and everything is good again.

2nd was where I was having the biggest clunk when shifting, adjusting the primary made it MUCH better. It's a HD product, it's going to be kinda noisy even when adjusted properly...
