Been riding for a little over a month now and I've been having trouble when shifting into 3rd at redline. It just won't shift about 50 percent of the time. At first I blamed it on rider skill but the problem now is so consistent it has me a little worried. Its an 05 xb12r 6800 miles. Any Ideas?

Man are you redlined at every gear shift?Bikes not really made for that, anyway the shifter drum could be worn or chipped it's possible the fork is bent or a spring is broken.THE clutch have you adjusted OR done some work lately?Going to need to remove the Primary cover to check the shifter drum and the fork can't see inside it so drain the fluid in a CLEAN container maybe a gallon jug w/ the top cut out so as to look at the fluid closely for metal.Check the drain plug as well. The Manuals at top of the page should help.75/90 amsoil OR Valvoline works good in the Sportster style Trannys.Good luck and post up w/pics when can. Welcome to the forum.*Jimi

Not every shift but sometimes 2nd and 3rd occasionally 1st if i wanna pull the wheel up a bit. Well first of all I have noticed some metal shavings on my primary plug when changing it, however I thought this was not to out of the ordinary( I may be very wrong but assumed it was normal for the clutch and tranny to wear a bit). But i think I just figured out the problem! The clutch cable snapped on me this afternoon. Luckily i was at advanced auto parts picking up parts to do a breather re-route and my buddy is the manager there. So it was no big deal just stored it in the back till i could borrow a truck and pick it up. My guess is that the cable was frayed and wasn't 100% disengaging the clutch causing 2-3 mis shifts and excessive clutch wear. Anyways I'll have to take the primary off to replace the cable so I'll do as you reccomended and hopefully I won't find any other problems.

Take a flash light to the shifter shaft. It has two springs on in right behind the clutch assy. I'm. Quite sure you can replace the clutch cable with out removing the primary

You cannot inspect the shift drum or forks via the primary. You'll need to split the cases to do this. The cable more than likely did not just stretch in the past few miles and not engage/disengage all the way. More so the cable has been stretching like cables do, and you didn't adjust the slack, there for wearing the clutches prematurely.

I have the same issue with mine. In the same gear I always mis-shift right around 4,000 rpm. If I keep shifts to around 3500 rpm it rarely happens.

Love the feed back! first of all i want to state i am inebrieated and only because my bike is a little hurt or other wise this nite would have been spent riding not drinking. I'm very good mechanically but not well versedm on bikes. If I can take it apart i can put it back together. OK so Tomorrow I will take the primary cover off. I rxpect to see alot of BS the guy I bought the bike off of has proved to be a good guy but much less mechanically inclined than he thinks he is i.e. first oil change after delivery the primary oil was completely shot and the main w so so. this was after two years of siting in a garage. OK smoke break be right back!

Ok thanks for bairing with me here probably should have waited till tomorrow when sobrity set in but I guess thats the story of my life :D I'm a huge sticlker on insuring that my vehicle is running at its full potentiel i raced cars for a few years and I sspend every minute under the hood again bikes are new ground for me. Heres my plan for the next few days...first remove clutch cable next drain primary fluid into a clean comtainter to inspect( only 700 miles since last oil change but wanted to switch to RP anyways) Take off primary cover(honestly I have no clue what to expect to see when I remove it again new to bikes but I love the challenge of fixing shit) I will inspect everything and see if anything is excessively worn. OK @bajabomber87 you refer to splitting the cases I dont have a clue to what that means but if you think it is needed I will do it like I said I enjoy the challenge and look forward to taking the bike apart so that i can learn more. Now from what I have read it seems that it is possible to change the cable without removing the primary cover but considering that i can't get a new cable till thursday i think my best bet is to take it off and inspect if any other dameage has been down. Ok not sure if i got the point across a dozen guinesses will do that to you but I appreciated the advice I've already recieved and any i get in advance

I am talking about the shifter shaft. The part that sticks out of the primary. It has 2 little springs on it.

I never said anything about you mentioning the shifter shaft. Notice how I said SHIFT DRUM OR FORKS....yes they are all internal.

1. Punch that prick in the face for being a douche hammer.
2. Make that asshole push it all the way to your house while you follow him in HIS truck with the A/C on.
3. Upon arrival to your house throw the truck in neutral and lay a brick on the gas pedal and lock his keys inside.

Am I an ASSHOLE?
