So my buddy was leaving work today and fired up his bike. Let it warm up for a bit and after putting on his gear he cracked the throttle a little before putting it in gear. Around 4,000 RPM the motor popped (almost like a backfire) and a small puff of black smoke came out and the bike died.
He tried restarting and it wouldn't even turn over. The fuel pump also doesn't turn on when you turn the key on like usual.

Any ideas where to start?

Which bike is it and what year? For a (Buell) he needs to check starting at the Spark plugs. Then see if he can (Manually) turn over the engine. You may be able use a 1/2 drive ratchet,A short extension and may need a socket to fit the bikes crank pulley. That pulley nut is a LEFT Hand Thread. Don't put the wrong tool on that pulley nut.Go Buy a Socket. It won't be cheap.Good Tools never are.please check the Engine oil while doing this.To check for metal and the like.It may be just a push rod or something small. Hope this gets you going in the right direction.

I had almost the same thing happen with my Blast earlier this year. My bike would also bog down and die during prolonged high RPM running. Turned out the air hose that connects to the top of the gas tank was pinched and couldnt breath. We also blew the fuel filter out with compressed air and changed the spark plug. Try blowing through the air hose though. if you cant its pinched and ends on the inside of the left passenger peg arm or the left swing arm.
