Got a 99 M2 that has a strut installed. The guy I got it from gave me the shock that came off the bike. Of course I would like to lose the strut and put the shock on but it does not have a reservoir or even a place to connect the reservoir. Anyone familiar with this model shock?

That is the correct shock for a Cyclone. The lightning and Thunderbolts had reservoir shocks but the poor Cyclone came without. Through owner replacement and recalls many Cyclones ended up with the other style as well.....either version will work just fine. Does your shock have the add-on reinforcements at both ends?

Thanks for the reply. IDK if it has the reinforcements. Just looks like regular bolt holes on both ends. Is there a way to check to make sure the shock is good before going through the trouble of putting it on? There is no leaking that I see.

It looks like a standard M2 pre-recall shock without the reinforcements. These got a "fix" in the form of a kit that the dealer installed. Supposedly, Buell would later exchange these shocks for the strengthened Showa shock. I haven't seen any of the latest version without a reservoir.

I'm guessing that if you look your shock over and don't see any oil residue it is probably still good.

Here is one like yours with the kit installed:
