View Full Version : Throttle "sticking"

Hey everyone. There was a lot of play in my throttle so I adjusted the cable slightly. I started the bike and it revved up really high, so naturally I adjusted the throttle back to the original start point. Now, when I blip the throttle it revs up to 4 or 5k and sticks there unless I manipulate the throttle. Sometimes it sticks there for a second then comes back down.

I looked at the throttle cable adjustment procedure in the maint manual but the cable is fine, it just seems to "stick" .

Thoughts?

I don't think it's hung up on the frame. I think it's the cam itself sticking or something.. I'll play with it more tomorrow..

I actually liked when my bar ends acted as a cruise control. This does not sound like when he turns throttle to 0 that the cable follows it. Not a sticky throttle grip issue if I am understanding correctly.

I'll check my bar ends but I am pretty sure the problem is at the cable where it connects to the cam, or the cam itself. So if I blip the throttle it wants to rev up on its own. I might just need to loosen it up more?

lube it and go from there imo.

Its a double pull so I would say check the throttle body itself. Maybe the return spring...?

It was the bar-end mirrors! Unfortunately I took the throttle grip assy apart first and the little pin that goes into the handle bars either was broken or broke off when I took it apart. Ugh.

Anyway, I loosened the bar-end mirror and the throttle moved freely. It wasn't that the mirror was butt up against the rubber grip, it was that when I tightened it the metal inside expanded and pushed on the plastic rotating portion of the grip. Now I just hope my mirror will stay on..

You can still use the bar ends, just don't put it in all the way, kinda leave some room so it doesn't touch the grip. Hopefully that helps, and always try the easiest fix first, I've had to learn that the hard way when I would work on my blast lol.

any chance that this could be caused but a dirty intake tube like where the butter fly under the air box is?

I don't have bar end mirrors and mine sticks. When I give it gas it just stays open and does not return. I have tried to adjust the cables but all they do is get tight and stick more. Was thinking maybe return spring like Dusty said? Any other thoughts?

Return spring fine. Turned out to be the bar ends. Just the plugs were on a little off. Pulled it and now it works fine. Put it back in slowly and its fine.

Glad it was just a simple fix. Seen that many times when an aftermarket set of bar ends or a different throttle tube usually aftermarket was installed incorrectly. Sometimes you can just ease the adapter out slightly and it will return quickly as needed.
That way the Rubber Throttle Grip wont get it the way.
MAKE sure to check on the part here and there so as not to lose it riding down the road. That way instinct wont kick in to reach out and grab if it comes out or Other it will interfere with your riding.
Also some Innox Cable Lube from Cycle Gear or other. motorcycle Supplies stores works well.
This will keep your cables in tip Top SHAPE.
The Harley Davidson Dealers are AS USUAL, throwing their hands up when it comes to parts on certain items.
I have been using other means to help the Buellers From Drag Specialities to American Sportbike and Cycle pirates and DEI Also, .ALL BALLS Racing and so on.
So Remember to maintain and make your list of Key Areas to keep it up on Two Wheels Keep This Site .and make your list. Small THINGS First. *JIMI;)

not sure if this problem got resolved. But I had the same issue. Checked the butterfly valve.. looked dirty with gunk. cleaned it with carb cleaner. no more sticky throttle.
