View Full Version : Engine at idle stumbles down to 500 rpm

So I did a TPS reset a week or two ago and the bike was running much better.
Now for the past 2 days it has been acting very funny. When I started it this morning and let it warm up in neutral it would hover around 1000-1100 then dip into the 500s and sound like it wants to die. Pick itself back and up do it again later.
I tried to ride out, didn't gas enough and it died. Started up again, rode a bit warmed up and once it was warm it was fine.
After work I am riding home and same stumble. This time even after warming up it doesn't stop becoming erratic. For a minute it will idle and ride fine through the RPMs. Then it will go back to stumbling and when I try to accelerate really bog down and not going anywhere fast.
I don't know if I should do another tps reset? The only thing on the original tps reset I did that was a bit odd was under the diagnostic tab the CPS signal (the big green 0 part in the middle) was red for me and had the number 5. Or maybe I should go check for something else like battery and grounds?
What is my attack plan!
Thanks.

I did let it warm up to the recommended temp.

Shot in the dark. Vacuum leak?

When was the last time you cleaned or changed your air filter?

Not sure on vacuum leak- I haven't messed with the throttle body.
I just bought the bike 2 months ago. It has a K&N and 5800 miles. Not sure if he has cleaned it recently.

Cheap first step. Only other thing I can think of is maybe the tps needs to be replaced but with only 5800 miles that would make much sence. Best of luck
Edit wouldn't make much sence

Started it up this morning, stumbled to 500 rpm, then just died. Started back up, stumbled a bit more then generally leveled out normalish idle.
The thing is bucking at low speeds like crazy. Granted it did this healthy, but it seems worse even after warmed up.
Tonight I am going to look at the filter (ordered refill kit, should be here tomorrow), verify battery connection, check grounds (could a dirty ground make a difference it has been raining like mad of late?) and do a tps reset and reload the map.
I have a map for my Jardine and k&n that I am using currently, but is there any other to try? I always see posts saying go to Buellmods but I never actually see a map loaded in there?

oh I should say it falls on its face around 3500 rpm and 4200 rpm, which it didn't do before.

If I remember right, you've got an '07? If so, have you hooked up to ECMSpy to see if there are any stored codes. Also, there's a few diagnostics you can run available in the program.

It is an 07. I will check the codes tonight and report back.
Thanks guys, always a big help!

I took a video of my bike after I started it sat for 8 hours.

Success!
TPS reset fixed the idle. But man did the bike still have some serious fall flat on your face holes in it, especially near 4200 rpm and on take off.
Flashed the stock eeprom, although I really don't think I messed with it and she was running great again.
Very odd. But now it is back to its super poppy decel self. Does that mean I am running mega rich?

Lean because the stock mapping was for the restrictive stock pipe. Jardines are comparable to an open pipe hence your decel pops.

Am I hurting anything?
What do you suggest I do?
Thanks.

Read up all you can in the ECMSpy manual, read as many threads as possible on datalogging and modify the mappings yourself.
Click HERE (http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/General-Motorcycle-Chat/150-Helpful-Links-for-Buellers....and-Growing.), scroll down the ECMSpy/Tuning section and check out any thread with Datalogging. If you've got a LOT of decel popping, you could modify your ECM with the Race map values for the short term until you get time to Datalog - also found under the ECMSpy section, 1st link.
