I did a little experiment today...

I gutted my air box last weekend and noticed some good performance gains.

I also noticed that my intake noise completely drowned out the sound of my race exhaust.

so... I did this...

20 minutes
hot glue
free carpet samples from home depot

I didn't expect this to solve all my problems but,. I also didn't want to go spend gobs of money on sound deadening material only to find that it does absolutely nothing.

well, I definitely noticed a difference. It may not have been a whole lot quieter but, it no longer sounds like someone is pounding an empty milk jug with a drumstick.

It lost a lot of that empty, "plasticky" sound. Which is enough change for me... Carpet wasn't primarily designed to be a sound deadening material anyways.

So now, on to bigger things. I'm going to try and pick up some of this stuff

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Automotive-sound-deadener-pioneer-deadening-70mil-3sqft-/220752126944?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3365da23e0#ht_5786wt_1033

Then some of this stuff to put on top of the thick mat.

I'll let you all know how it turns out!

If worse comes to worse, I'm sure a big fat turbo would solve the problem :D

I like this idea. When I mount my shoyomoto airbox cover, I may do something like this.

dyna mat sound deadner works well.
little safer hot glue and heat is not a great combo

Why do I get this terrible feeling that the hot glue is going to give on the one that is directly on top while going down the road and fall right on the velocity stack...

great idea and I understand (i hope) that this is mostly a trial mock up.... High strength 2 part epoxy and dynamat gets my vote

Google home depot sound deadening. I used that stuff to quiet down my Datsun 510 and it worked really good. Its like a roof trim sealer with a really sticky black side and an aluminum sheet over it. Forgot the brand i bought but similar products should do the samething.

crap ^^ i should of thought of that when i was walking around HD. I didnt figure i would be able to buy a small quantity of anything there though. Everything is in huge rolls.

oh well...

I ordered some acoustical wall padding and the thick adhesive mat stuff for about 20 shipped on ebay.

I DO, however, like the idea of that aluminum surface. I see that standing up to the heat better than simple acoustical wall padding.

welp, I've got some updates. got my sound deadening stuff in the mail. I was planning one holding off on installing it (until i paint my plastics) but, I don't plan on paint the undersides anyways....

i've gotta say... I think the carpet was better. This didn't seem to make a big difference (keep in mind, i've been riding around with the carpet for a week). I'm sure its better than nothing BUT, it's not better than the carpet. It seems I need a softer foam-like material.

so... i've got this but, Im not sure that it can withstand the heat inside the air box . Also, i can't imagine that it help air-flow very much. I would hate to negate the advantages of the open air box by over-insulating it.

That carpet is looking great right about now... any other ideas?

is that auralex???

Yeah you can get Auralex in thin sheets of dense-ish material to go over your dynamat.
Every supercomputer lab I've ever been through uses that to quiet the old printers, and air handlers.

It makes a 120dB machine sound like 30dB.

For you I'd say don't displace anymore air from your airbox. Just throw another layer of dynamat on it as a doubler.

I've been thinking about this on my STT for a while. The resonance from the airbox rings my jaw bone if Im right over it.

Anyway thanks for sharing your project and findings.

FYI...try to cut the material to fit rather than piecing it together, you'll have better results, take your time in getting the shape desired before cutting the material, do some dry fits
