Sorry if I missed this, I did attempt a search or two:

What is the difference between an S, an SS and an SCG? (I've lurked for a while and haven't seen a "CityX" so I'm not as concerned about that model).

Also, as a general rule is it safe to assume that any XB with a silver frame is a 9 and a black frame is a 12 (assuming stock)?

Is there a way to paint a silver frame black and not make it look terrible?

Thanks.

s is standard size. ss is like 4 or 5 inches longer. scg is lower to the ground by like 2 or 3 inches. i had a 12 and it had a silver frame. so i think it mattered what the other colors were....mine was an orange 06 ss silver frame.

Here's a 2010 Buell press release (http://www.topspeed.com/motorcycles/motorcycle-reviews/buell/2010-buell-lightning-xb12ss-xb12scg-xb9sx-ar77243.html) that describes in detail the different Lightning models.

What about the TT model and what is the RCG? Sorry for the newbie question(s).

Also, has anyone ever taken a SCG and put the SS swingarm on it to make it lower/longer?

A RCG is a Firebolt (R) with the lightning (CG) suspension, I did this while my bike was being put back together after my accident.

Click my name and you can see my rebuild thread.

xtremelow did the ss on a lightning google buellxb.com warhorse and you will find the pics.

Kind of small pic to read the specs but here is a link for file (http://froggypwns.com/buellpdfs/Buell%20Poster_18x24HR.pdf).

Here is my XB12Scg.

Just FYI for quick reference, an Scg has a yellow spring on the rear shock, the regular "S" has a blue spring and the SS, TT and Uly's (longer frame & tall suspension) have white spring.

I've got a 03 xb9s. It's got a yellow spring on the shock. But it definitely is and S. Not an SCG.

Sounds like you have an "SL". Basically an Scg but a 9. I think they only did that in 2003 but I could be wrong about that.

You might have an XB9SL (Low version of the XB9S). Look at the poster in the link ^^ above. The blue shock also came on the regular XB9S.

Yes you all are correct a 03 xb9sl is the lower version of the standard "s" model same geometry as an scg.

I have an 03 xb9s with the yellow shock, title says xb9s/xb9sl.....? Muffler is 4 inches off ground. Prob an sl? Oh, and awesome poster!

The easiest way to spot a scg/sl is the yellow shock, and the bottom of the outer fork tube lines up with the top screw of the fender.

So if I have the yellow spring it's an SL. Even though it says XB9S on the bars by the dash.

Does the XB12sTT indicate that it is in fact that model on the guage cluster or just the handlebar clamp and on the title?[confused]

just barely though; 5lbs more than the 9. it's definitely the lightest 12.

Just to clarify: its the SS's frame that is longer not just the swingarm?

New_Guy

Wouldn't the XB9SL be the lightest? If the Scg is the lightest 12 than the 9'er of the Scg should be lightest by the same token

^but the 12 is better, hehe. at least to me its better than the 9er.
