ok, so here's to smacking myself on the forehead...
I just found out that my XB9S has the "Low" rear suspension installed and have had my 9s since the summer of '06, never thought anything of it 'til I was posting info to someone about lowering a 9s to 9sl...found out through another thread that the "Standard" rear suspension spring is blue and not yellow! so that's why I've been feeling a bit cramped while riding, duh, duh...
now I've gotta find someone close by (San Diego) to try the "Standard" on and see if I need to change mine out...damn, yet another thing to get, maybe?

Well I could be wrong but it looks like you have a complete 9SL setup. Those forks look just like mine and I own an scg which is the same suspension. It is hard to see from your pic for sure but look close at the amount of tube exposed on your bike below that reflector and front axle.

that kick stand looks awfully long for the bike to be lowered

Hmm... yellow spring, shorter forks... I think mine might be lowered too. Come to think of it, I sat on a cityX in the dealership when I bought mine and they were the same height. It also has a big ass dent on the bottom of my muffler that was there when I bought it. Think mine is lowered? It sure isn't a whole lot taller than my Blast.

Yep, both bikes pictured above are "low" or scg bikes. Easily visible by the 3.5" of exposed fork slider vs 5.5" on the std models.

alrighty then...now to find someone in or around San Diego that has a 9s that hasn't been lowered:o will decide then if I'll keep her the way she is or change her back[smirk]...

by the way guys, already have some one with dibs on the rear suspension if I decide to change her...

freak2180...I'm still on the fence about that, the color is just right though!!!:D

oh, and here's where I put the "cheese":D

YELLOW Sping = SCG or LOW which was made in 03 and was a 9 (silver frame) The forks are a scg/low also look where the fork tube lines up with the top fender screw, that's how you can tell other than the yellow spring.

Seating position doesn't change with just the suspension, the seat is what makes you cramped.

well wouldnt it say "xb12scg" on the handlebar clamp then? damn.....

oh9bolt
10-07-2011, 09:42 AM
I know on the 03's it didn't say low. I don't know when they started or if they ever started putting it on the clamp. Someone will chime in with that info.

and from what the vin # says it is a scg. i guess you learn something new everyday (if you aint careful)

oh9bolt
10-07-2011, 10:16 AM
thrst from the pics of your bike you don't have the low seat, so your cramped-ness won't get better with a new seat.

Just a fyi.

yea, we both have 'em I guess, gonna have my son take a pic of the manufacture decal on the frame that will show the model and year to confirm, but curious though, I'm the 3rd owner of the bike, wonder if one of the previous owners may have swapped out the parts, hmmmmm?

jakestoler, good point there, the side stand is longer than LightningLevi's pic, my bike does stand up a bit high

Hey fellas, if you want to raise the ride height of your scg's, just locate an "S" shock(blue spring) and a set of "S" showa cartridges and springs (w/spacers) & sidestand.. it's an easy swap.. (150-200$ in parts) I'm doing mine this weekend.

LightningLevi

I dunno tho, I kinda like the 1200cc minibike feel. Is there any advantage to being taller, other than not scraping on stuff as much? Cus I don't really scrape, except on the curb at the end of my friend's driveway, but its easily avoidable. It doesn't make you corner faster or anything?

thrstrmech
10-07-2011, 05:15 PM
well, the verdict's in, I do have an scg, built Feb 03:o

thumpin1203...can you list the part numbers, please and thanks

I only have trouble getting over speed bumps, have to cross 'em at an angle so not to scrap the exhaust

when i had the firebolt, i always felt like i was a little short for it...i never got that feeling with this bike. mine will stay as is....truth of it was i always wondered what a scg would feel like....lol...little did i know. now i am wondering what a regular lightning would ride like....lol.

thrstrmech: Here are the parts for "my" swap...I got the blue-spring "S" shock, longer side-stand, fork components (and swingarm) from a low mile part out, the cartridges are fresh w/gold valves installed ..(servicing and upgrading forks is really pretty easy after you have done a couple) The UPS man didn't show with my new spring compressor from "traxxion" today, like I had hoped (needed for reassembly)so it looks like next week... I don't have the part numbers for you, but this is basically whats needed. A simple, complete 03-04 41mm fork swap, "S"tube for "SCG"tube, is faster & easier yet.

Yeah, I got tired of worrying about speedbumps etc. at the SCG ride height.. also, the extra travel of the S height will be nice on the occaisional super-rough road around here..

06' "S" spring/ swingarm (re-powdercoated)

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/8475_20111007185542_L.jpg

"S" fork components, cartridges (gold valves)spacers,& springs/ "S" side-stand

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/8475_20110429190622_L.jpg

I'll probably keep the SCG parts to switch back if I ever feel the need to..

You don't need to swap out the swingarm, or swap out fork components. I swapped my '08 Scg stuff for regular '03 S stuff. The fork diameters changed in '06 or '07, but Scg forks are the same diameter as the '03-'05 forks, so I didn't have to swap my triple clamps.

thrstrmech
10-08-2011, 03:28 AM
cb750...good info, so I won't take a big hit in the wallet after all:D

thumpin...you are going to cut the "cheese" right? LOL

so, does anyone have the P/N's for the fork components, want to have 'em handy just in case

oh9bolt
10-08-2011, 03:36 AM
You should just trade with someone, davexb12r said he wanted to.

thumpin1203
10-08-2011, 07:29 AM
Yeah, a trade is a very good way to go... the triple clamps may have to be swapped of course, depending on fork dia.

I'm updating the 05' swingarm to an 06' just because I like the look a bit better, not because it's necessary

Cut the cheese? LOL.. I think I'm one of the few that likes the stock tailpiece/'grater.. I went through a phase where I wanted to do it and bought an extra to chop, but now I think I am going to leave it stock & powder it satin black to change up the look now & then..
