ey guys, Just hit 20k miles on my xb12. I figured while I was doing the big service... i might as well do a few other things... we all know how this goes...
all my plastics are going in for paint and I'm planning a few other things to clean up the look of the bike.
Plastics will be white. windscreen will be dropped about an inch. new decals. I'm keeping the gold wheels (we'll see how this turns out). and a bunch of other things I can't currently think of.
hah... also (just my luck) these pics were taken about 5 minutes before the bike fell over in the driveway... anyone got a set of pegs collecting dust?! :D
Anyways, here are the "before pics... tomorrow it comes apart!

Very nice bike [up]
Sucks to hear it has fell over :(
Hope damages are not serious and you are OK. Didn't you think about leaving the plastics in red and painting the underseat rails in red as well. Looks terrific

You can see more pics in the thread of this bike owner Markr9909 from UK.

Though if you already have a plan to follow then personalize your bike up to your taste and do not forget to show pics on the process, progress and results :)
Best of luck!

Thanks guys!
Yes, I did do the undertail myself. Chopped the tail, Filed out the shape. Sanded with 180/400/800, then sanded and painted (only the bottom half) with duplicator semi gloss trim paint from Autozone.
that red tail DOES look good. My mind is already made up though :) I have an odd thing for white bikes
I went white on my last bike too (01 sv650)

I think everybpdy should take notes on how you painted your tail eliminator. Silver to match the side rails and black to match the undertray, not all black unless its a 09+.
Im excited to see the finished product white bikes never look bad.

painting the underseat rails in red
Damn those red seat rails coupled with the red seat cowl look sharp! I think I'll be stealing the seat rails idea! I have a seat cowl, but never use it as I'm too tall and I end up pushing it back as I ride!
Sorry for thread jack!

And show us the pics when done. Seat Cowl would be not necessary. Just paint the seat rails. It would look terrific[up][up][up]

hey folks,
Got some work done over the past two days...
lots of cleaning and the like. Had a few wires that were chaffed from all the vibration. had to fix those. Cleaning grease and grime is a paint too....
this is how it looked this morning, after the removal of plastics and some bodywork
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1281.jpg
removed and ready for paint!
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1271.jpg
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1277.jpg
okay... hang with me here for a second... I noticed THIS when i was taking apart my tail for paint. Its a perfectly good Tag light going to waste (hidden beneath metal)
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1287.jpg
what if I cut a little extra metal out to let the light shine through...
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1282.jpg
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1291.jpg
then cleaned it all up and painted it...
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1301.jpg
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1306.jpg
I scuffed and painted up the seat rails too

lowering the windscreen about an inch. (imho) lowering it to the next set of holes and only using 2 set of screcs is WAY too much of a drop. this should be perfect.

more cleaning!

ah... big question for everyone. I'd like to paint the front headlight/gauge/ignitionswitch/ mount-thing too BUT, it appears to be held in with a "security torx bit" any idea where to pick one of these up?? it looks like i might be able to just drill out the center of a normal torx bit...
any ideas?

Lowe's has them here (http://www.lowes.com/pd_177808-353-CC60391_?PL=1&productId=1156401), or McMastercarr.com if nothing else, called Tamper-resistant on their site - they have everything. I wouldn't try drilling the center out of a torx. A good one will be alloy and just as hard as most any drill bit. Plus it's guaranteed to be impossible to keep on center of the bit unless you use an end mill.

hey guys,
Got a little more work done today...
oil change
drained primary
adjusted primary chain
finished spraying all the semi-gloss black parts
I also found out (yesterday) that i have a cyst in my left hand (ah yes, hand problems at the ripe age of 21). I blame the ridiculous clutch pull of the xb12.
I wasn't planning on it but, I've ordered a "clutchlite x-soft". I'll be installing that and lubing my clutch cable when it comes in.
anyways...
here are the "front side cover things". (I actually ended up borrowing a set of security torx form a buddy)

http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1341.jpg
I had to go back and fix a few imperfections in one of the side rails
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1342.jpg
all the black parts are done!
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1345.jpg
I also freshened up the headers with some flat black exhaust paint
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1327.jpg
Tomorrow my iridium plugs and ebc HH brake pads should be coming in. Hopefully I'll get those done AND install my R6 throttle tube.
I'm also planning on flashing the 07 race map. I hear it's quite a bit "better" than the 04 buell race map that I'm currently running. Anybody have an (ecmspy compatible) copy of it laying around?
Thanks guys!

It sucks being at work all day... I wanna be home workin on the bike.
EBR is KILLIN me. I wanted to put the new "erikbuellracing" decals (the ones with the new logo) on the tank but, The day i went to buy them, they sold out. hopefully they get some back in stock soon.
I'm interested to see how the white and gold will turn out too...
It wasn't my first chouce but, I really didn't wanna go through all the hastle of getting these wheels powdercoated.

I think it will look great and id even get the original gold buell stickers for the tank after all shes still a buell
burgurboy
10-11-2011, 04:28 PM
considering the EBR decals are out of stock... I might actually do that.
I had the crazy idea today of painting the plastics semi-gloss white. I would have to put either a metallic or pearl in the paint to make it -not- look like primer. I was this picture yesterday and it's got me thinking...
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5092/5579972375_8e76ba6295_b.jpg
IMO that flat red looks AMAZING.
I'm still undecided about that...
anyways... didn't get a whole lot done today. I bought the wrong throttle tube (05 as opposed to 06). couldn't check the static timing because i don't have a battery or rear tire hooked up (to turn over the motor.)
The 02-05 r6 tube is almost exactly the same as the buell unit
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1377.jpg
new pads. If anyone wants the oem pieces-o-crap... you can have them.
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1362.jpg
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1363.jpg
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1366.jpg
I did, however, throw on a set of EBC HH pads (and cleaned up the front caliper). My iridium plugs came in today so, I installed those. (that read cylinder really isn't bad as everyone makes it out to be). I also finished up the oil change... that's about it.
The previous owner was apparently never taught how to properly install a bolt. the "cross-threaded bolt count" is up to 5 now. every single bolt holding in the air scoop was cross threaded. ridiculous.

hey folks,
Had a pretty productive day today.
Installed clutchlite x-soft
removed/cleaned/lubed/reinstalled/adjusted clutch cable
filled the primary with oil
checked static ignition timing.
I also reinstalled the entire tail assembly.
Talked to my paint guy and the plastics should be done by wednesday, next week.
all i've go to do now is...
-piece the front assembly back together
-modify the throttle tube
-install new blinkers
-flash the 07 race map
-bleed brakes
-wait for my plastics to be done.
I took some pictures today but, of course, the card was full. none of them actually saved...

as for the r6 throttle tube.... It (in theory) should reduce the amount of turn to WOT. So, if the stock "turn" from idle is 1/4 of a turn, this should reduce it to about 1/5th of a turn
heres a link to the mod
http://www.buelletinboard.com/forums/showthread.php?14769-DIY-Throttle-Cam/page2
BUT of course, i bought the wrong throttle tube. so, instead, I'm just going to modify the one i bought with this mod:
http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Buell-Lightning-XB12S-XB12Ss-CityX-XB12Scg/throttle-cams
also... in case anyone was wondering, The tag light mod worked great. the picture doesn't do it justice.
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/IMG_20111014_012956.jpg
as for the paint, I use this stuff. It's AMAZING. it has trouble sticking to bare metal but, a quick coat of primer solves that. Everything else, I just scuffed with 800 grit sandpaper and threw on 2 coats
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i289/Yojhan/DuplicolorTrimPaint.jpg
I buy it at the local auto zone. I'm pretty sure its less that $10 a can. I like it a lot. I's not flat but, it's not glossy. a nice middle-ground

Where on earth to the throttle cables route though? they seem very "awkward" where they're currently routed. Anyone got pics of the correct way?
throttle tube is almost done! I need to finish everything up with some sandpaper but, after that it's ready to install.
I used jbweld (and let it set for 24 hours) as opposed to superglue. I don't ever want this pvc to come undone, lock the throttle up and cause trouble.
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1409.jpg
ebr decals came in yesterday. wooh! these will go on the tank cover where "buell" used to be.
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/IMG_20111016_004903-2.jpg
these aren't really part of my build... but, i'll brag about em anyways. We have a guy down the road that has a business buying & parting out motorcycles. with every bike he buys, he has leftover tires. I grabbed these pilot road 2's (installed) for $100. they're still very soft and can't have more than 500 miles on them. I didn't really want a 190 on the back but, @ that price, i couldn't say no
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/IMG_20110908_193947.jpg
my old tires were SO flat spotted, they could stand up on their own. no joke. I don't think the previous owner made a single turn...

do it. It doesn't hold up well when you try and stand on it... while taking a picture of the dash (so, you can't use your hands to keep the bike from falling). yeah, stupid move on my part. but, you shouldn't really sit on ANY bike on a stand.
as for the cables...
Do they run right behind the entire front structure? or do they run inside of the front structure?

updates for today
+++++++++++++++++++++
today sucked. hard.
I spent the majority of the day working on the modified throttle tube. I couldn't get it to work right for the life of me. I've given up on it for now. I may go back to it later but SOMETHING is making the throttle stick BAD.
I'm sure part of it is my wonky cable routing. I might try it again later once i get my cables run right.
I've got my blinkers installed but can't get them to flash. I've tried the "no money led flasher mod" but, I think i frigged something up in my relay.

great goo. the modified throttle tube works now. I re-ran the throttle cables (with the help of squid) and everything is a LOT smoother now. the only problem is... i think i sanded off too much of the PVC.
I still have the buell tube and another piece of pvc. I might try and build another one tonight...
I'm still having trouble with my new LED flashers though.

Right?!?! it's the background on my computer night now.
Alright folks. I got some big updates.
Modded throttle tube V2.0. Now that i know it works. I'm going to try and go a little bigger on the cam diameter.
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1432.jpg
I fixed my led flasher.
"2" 100 ohm (25w) resistors wired in parallel. One on each rear blinker.
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/XBrebuild/IMG_1429.jpg
These leads are famous for breaking off right at the end of the resistor. I'm sure the obnoxious vibration of the xb12 wouldn't help that problem. I did a little "reinforcement".

also, is anyone currently running the 07 xb12 race map??
if so, what are the chances of you sending me just the fuel/timing maps? (in ecmspy format)

Dont forget to screw your axle in before you ride please.
When I first started riding, my two dream bikes were the xb12 and the z1k.
about a year later, my buddy bought that black and orange z1k. that's when I knew I had to get an xb12. So, in the end, It all worked out. I I ever I want to take the Z1k out, it's right down the road.
My buddies' bikes also consist of:
250 rebel Bobber
big bore 2-stroke zuma
1300 Royal star
(2) sv650s
1100 vstar
cbr600rr
We've got pretty much all bases covered.
big question for you guys... can the small rear hugger fender be installed whire the back tire is on? (this is why my rear wheel is not fully installed. I dont want to have to take it all back apart again.)
oh. also... I happened upon these earlier...

due to an off series of crap.... i don't have a single good picture of the bike...
I took the bike out tonight for pictures had it all set up / assembled. And the camera (and all of the memory cards) were gone. my buddy was bringing his nikon over but, by the time he got over it was dark and the bike was disassembled again.
this is literally all i've got.
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/IMG_20111021_190916.jpg
My levers came in, they're a pretty good match to the wheels. for chinese levers they are GREAT. came in nice packaging and everything. I normally don't try to promote chinese stuff... but, from that i can tell, this is quality stuff.
http://i1020.photobucket.com/albums/af321/burgurboy/IMG_20111021_164321.jpg
they installed in about 5 minutes. they feel great too.
Does anyone know where i can get a replacement "sleeve" for the clutch perch thing so, it doesn't wobble all over the place?
here's a buddy's sv650. It's getting the same treatment. it used to be yellow. We got the wheels powder coated highlighter green (if you didn't already notice) last week. the pictures don't do it justice. the green is super bright

BURGURBOY, what aftermarket exhaust system do you have, how $$$ and how is it? I like the looks of the dual outport but i am apprehensive in changing my XB12R stock exhaust to something like yours coz of possibility messing up the normal performance. Any info is appreciated[up] PPDRGN,
burgurboy

timmyj,
the paint is some type of glossy-white two part enamel. I dont know the specific color codes, brand, etc. I DO know that it is not a traditional basecoat/clearcoat finish.
It is definitely not rattle can paint. I pride myself in my rattlecan paintjobs but, they just don't stand up to the elements (especially gasoline)
PPDRGN,
This is technically not a modified version of the stock exhaust. I am currently running the Buell Race exhaust. I LOVE the powerband it delivers (I believe it's only outperformed by the micron) but, these exhausts are not cheap. I'd say you're going to spend atleast $500 on a used one (i dont believe they make them anymore)
Mine came with the bike when I bought it. As much as i love this pipe, I could never justify buying one...
I think americansportbike did a big (and very well written) review of many of the xb12 aftermarket exhausts. I don't remember any specific numbers but, i think the "modified" stock exhausts did pretty well.
I'll try to get it all back together tomorrow folks, and snap some pics.
I've put about 50 miles on the bike since the "completion" of this project.
The throttle tube is great. It makes the low-end stuff a bit twitchy but, it's just something i'll get used to.
The clutch lite, cable cleaning, and new levers did wonders for my clutch pull. Its now comparable to my buddies' japanese bikes.
the blinkers are great. Others have said the rear blinkers are definitely visible.
the ebc HH pads are still bedding in (about 200 more miles to go) but are alreads showing huge improvements over the stock pads. after a brake bleed, new pads, and levers, it feels like a whole new braking system.
The 07 race map seems to be much smoother in the 2k-3k rpm range. I also cannot, for the life of me,keep the front wheel down @ wot in first (this could also be due to the temperature drops we've been having in FL lately)
Pictures tomorrow!

Due to some mess-ups in the paint (runs) I don't have the rear fender hugger installed. It's white also and should bring some "color" to the back of the bike. You'll just have to use your imagination.

i love the look of the all white bike, if you dont mind me asking, how much did it cost to get the plastics painted?
burgurboy
10-31-2011, 11:05 AM
well... honestly... i don't know
It's a family friend that paints for me. I did all the labor and prep work. He sprayed the paint. I asked him how much I owed him and he said the paint was "donated".
so, in the end... i didn't really pay anything. :D
