I changed the oil and this is the sound I got. Bike was running hot, fan going wild (after a short ride) and this awful noise.
I know there was too much oil in both the primary and swingarm which was m fault, but is that what would cause this noise?

Holy **** that sound really bad. I would take it to a shop and have it looked at

If I were u I would drain everything out and start over then start it if it makes that noise again I would take it in.

What oil did you use?

mobil 1 v twin synthetic. I just hope I didn't permanently cause any damage. I will be replacing the swingarm and do a fresh oil change when that happens.

5733 miles. I did not mess with the primary chan tensioner. All I did was remove the plate to add oil and replace it.
The noise seemed to be coming from the primary. But the bike sure did ride like **** and got worse the higher the RPM (although I don't think I got about 2500, just tried to get home.)

You just added oil?
Dynasty

Yep, first ride after adding oil. At first it was riding perfectly. But then after it warmed up it went crazy.
I know there is too much oil in both holes. I am thinking once it got hot it expanded and started the trouble? If that is the case, did I do permanent damage?

You should be able to drain them.. Too much oil for a short ride and maybe you fouled the plugs. Take a little off the top. see if anythings coming out of your breather reroute or backing up into your air box.

Too much oil can cause all sorts of weird problems. Oil level is very important, you know its wrong. Fix it before running the bike, then see how it does.

I wish I could. As you know J she is now not in running shape. We have to replace the swingarm to get her up and running. I figure we will just do a fluid flush and figure it out from there. I hope Buellsterparts ships out today or tomorrow so we can try for the weekend.

talking about oil level, i know it takes 2.5 quarts in the swingarm. but man, its so hard to read the dipstick. it always shows empty either its hot or cold. so i just put a total of 2.7 quarts.

^ I do the same I drain all of mine and I do about 2.5 I'm the swingarm the rest in the filter and call it a day
Dynasty

See I put 2.5+ maybe closer to 2.8 quarts in the swingarm plus probably 5 ounces in the filter. I did not realize the filter counts towards the rest.
Plus I think I am closer to 1.25 in the primary.

I am wondering if I blew out a spark plug from too much oil/pressure. Maybe it riding and sounding like **** is because of that? But would that cause the engine to run hot and have the fan go crazy?

Overfill the oil by too much and and she wont turn over. She'll run like crap and stumble all the place and you'll need a little twist to keep her going. Drain it a little and you would notice the difference on the try if you haven't fouled a plug.. Like I said Check your airbox and your breather reroute for extra residue etc. Did that once with the stock harley plugs. They still ran but I switched to the iridums after that just to cover all basis for my FI problem.

that sounds more like a exhaust leak. but its hard to tell with youtube. but..
I will be replacing the swingarm
whats wrong with your swingarm? are you the one who striped out the oil plug?
also 3qrt of oil is not going to hurt your bike. it will blown oil out your breather or you would be blowing blue smoke from burning the oil.
now the primary did your chain adjuster back out. can you hear the chain or feel it bouncing of the primary?

Swingarm is gonezo. Prior owner stripped the plug. Tried to term sert it which actually made matters worse (my fault) and then I tried to drill and tap it to 5/8" last night. Seemed ok but it isn't 100% flush and leaks after riding. To top it off, I tried to siphon out some of the excess oil and the POS siphon broke a piece of plastic into the swingarm which is now out of reach and marinating in the swingarm.
So, make a long story short, it is gone. I ordered a new one from Buellster parts. J_Undisputed being the great guy he is has offered to help me replace it when it comes in. I am going to be owe him a case of beer!

Dude you need to slow down when you work on your bike. You know what they say "Measure twice cut once". Or " Measure twice pour once" Anyway the book tells you how to read the dip stick:D

hopefully something didn't end up in your motor

Brightbuell- you are right, but that ship has sailed haha.
Squidbuellie- I honestly doubt anything made it into the motor. I had lube on all the bits and taps and flushed the swingarm with 4 quarts of oil after all the work. Plus I never turned the bike on after the siphon part broke into the swingarm.

It is all fixed and running great. New swingarm and no more noise. I am thinking it was the chain a bit loose? Anyways, all is well now.

I wish I knew. We threw a new swing arm on, put the right amount of oil in and started it up. No more noise. Very odd.

Perhaps it was the lack of a vacuum in the oil system created by leak. I guess then it would be able to duplicate the sound by starting the bike with the oil cap/dipstick out, though.

Always hard to tell with youtube Wolfo, but that sounds super familiar. Mine is gone. You check your primary chain?

that was way early this summer, it was because my oil pump gear failed and pieces were bouncing around and messing up my cams.
it inspired my teardown and I replaced the gear and cams and did alot of my changing with colors during that

Very strange. It is running like a champ now, no more noise or issues. I hope we had different problems for my sake!

I'd honestly still say to take of the cover and look at them. if there is damage there'll probably be some metal mesh on top of the oil pump and on the bottom of the casing. so you don't have to reinstall the cams make sure to take the timing cover off and undo the cam position sensor otherwise it'll pull out one of the cams when you take the cover off.
it's a lot better to prevent or make sure it isn't damaged, than to have to replace all those expensive parts when fragments get into them.
hope you don't have the problem I did
