For the past week, the trip reading and Time on the Odometer on my '03 XB9R keeps resetting. Every now and then I'll start it and the trip will be reset to zero and the Time will be wiped, restarting back to 1:00. I have no idea what could be causing it.

The bike starts without any hesitation though. I'll check regardless just to make sure but it usually starts up fine without any hiccups.

Is there anyway to check whether it might be the voltage regulator (with a multimeter)?

or dirty connections. shine the metal surfaces with a wire brush, add some di-electric grease, and put it all back together snuggly.

okay, i have this problem, too. bike starts fine, but the trip odometer(s) and clock reset. it does this frequently. i will look at the battery posts and update with findings. is there a ground i should be checking?

sorry to resurrect the thread, but this is EXACTLY what is happening with my bike. being that there is no fuel gauge, the trip odometer is how i keep track of the fuel level. my ducati was the same.

thanks,

d.

When the low fuel light comes on, it should switch to a tripmeter with "F xxx" on it.

It might be re-setting from a weak battery. It will still start, but in the process of cranking over compression (especially the first rotation), the voltage will drop low enough to cut the +12v power to the cluster.

Do the gauges ever re-set (sweep) while riding? If they do it's a bad connection on the cluster memory circuit.

^^^^^^ exactly what shaughn said above. a momentary voltage drop of below approx. 9 volts DC will trigger the gizmo in the gauge cluster for the clock to blink along with both it and the tripmeter to revert to default settings and continue to blink. i liken it to the clock warning you that you either have dirty/loose battery terminal connections or a battery sentenced to death-row. have the battery load tested...clean and tighten both battery terminal connections....check your ground cable at its frame connection. i would also look at the front of your steering head or bottom triple clamps. your 4-wire ground cluster is affixed there with a torx screw and irritating source of gauge problems.

sorry for the late reply, i've been out of town for nine days.

i am going with a weak battery, as stated above. i verified that there were miles on the trip odometer, started the bike and everything was reset to zero. i also noticed that sometimes it will will just make a noise as if trying to start, then it will rotate the engine and start. my ducati would NEVER start with a battery that was at all weak. very interesting.

i will put the charger on it an see what happens. i see a new battery in the very near future.

thanks, gents. d.

update.

i pulled the battery. there was some corrosion on the positive terminal. not a lot, but visible. the multimeter said 12.35 volts, which is not very good. i shined up the terminals and put the charger on it. i am crossing my fingers.
