Hi Guys,
I've been looking for a Buell over here in Oz. Even second hand, they are really expensive over here (1'm talking aroung 12-14k for a good '07XB12)and rare as hens teeth.

I'm toying with the idea of buying in the US and importing into Australia. Not sure where to start but I've had a quote for freight come in at about $1200 which suggest that it might be a viable option.

Does anybody on this forum have any ideas / experience with exporting bikes from the US? I think I'll probably need some help from the seller as far as prepping a bike for transport & delivering it to the freight hub goes. Would I be better off to go through a dealer?

There might be an opportunity here for somebody who wants to sell to get a good price if I can make this work.

GBN, depending on what model you are after I would keep looking - there are some that are a lot less than that.
My mate in Newcastle just sold his '07 12X (14,000km, factory panniers and very clean) for $8,000. He had it for sale for a couple of months and originally listed it for $9,900 couldn't get a nibble at that price.

There are a couple of Australian forums where it wouldn't hurt to pop up a 'Wanted' ad perhaps?

Good luck! There seem to be quite a few Australians on this site. Shouldn't be long before you find what you're looking for.

Here's a nice one for you
http://www.bikesales.com.au/all-bikes/private/details.aspx?Cr=14&R=11497994&keywords=&trecs=58&__Ns=p_IsPoa_Int32|0||p_LastModifiedDate_DateTime| 1||p_PriceSort_Decimal|1&__sid=1334073636BB&__Nne=15&__Qpb=1&seot=1&__N=1432%20604%201430%201429%201626%201428%2042949 67172&silo=1400

He has it listed for a $1000 less on the forum
http://buellersdownunder.com/showthread.php?t=8705

And if you where to import I think you need to add $6500 to the cost of the bike by the time you get in on the road here

I can't stop myself from scribbling on the back of envelopes - here's what I've got so far:
Purchase $6000
International freight $1050 (uship)
GST on purchase + freight $705
Import duty 5% $350 ?? not sure if applicable
Domestic freight (USA) $300 ???
Domastic freight (local) $nil
Customs fees $220
Local inspection $120

twoguns

compliance?

GBN
10-25-2011, 10:35 PM
Total $8745 for the imported bike

Alternatively if i bought 'locally' (interstate as there are virtually none in my city) I'd be up for $11600 (Stellio's find - '09 XB12ss) plus $120 for local inspection and I'm guessing maybe $300 for freight to where I live. Total $12,020
So there's about $3500 (25%) to be saved by importing - provided it goes smoothly. Either was I'm buying sight unseen which is not ideal.

Yeah Twoguns, compliance is the next thing I need to research. Shouldn't be too difficult provided I buy something 100% stock standard, but at this stage it's still an unknown.

I actually have a hidden adgenda - if I can save a bit of money on a bike for me I might be able to afford an ealrier model XB9 for my wifes chrismas pressy as well.

Sorry Twoguns, I'm in Adelaide.

Only a couple of 1125's for sale locally, which would set me back 13 to 14 large.

no, i think you have an issue buying something so new and trying to import it. i am not sure if there is a rule being either older than 7yrs or you have to prove its a prior personally owned vehicle and you are wanting to bring it to the country with you.

I've found a couple of companies that specialise in importing late model Harleys US -> AU, sent a few email enquiries tonight, fingers crossed they'll get back to me tomorrow and tell me they do Buells all the time & it's not too expensive :)

Another good find from Stellio. I'm really after a Lightening but would be more than happy with a Firebolt.
Looiking at '08, '09 models

That's actually a good example - are there any Americans here that can tell me what something like this would go for in the US?

this was the last of hte xbS... i should have kept her too.

Yeah you should have - so you could sell it to me!!

I'm not certain but I read somewhere about concessions for bikes that were not sold in australia - something to do with not depriving collectors because a model was not available over here. Might be to my advantage.

So far no word from the importers.

I tell you what, I'm pretty confused. I've found some (government) websites that state that the import would be allowed, and a few links later it says I can't! Specifically the Transport SA website (our equivalent of vicroads) has provisions for imports and pretty much says no problem provided the bike meets some requirements, and then directs me mo a VIA form (import application) that states that post 89 bikes cannot be imported by individuals.

Now on ebay, might be worth contacting the seller and ask what the reserve is, if you could get it for $11K with the extras listed that would be a bargin.

what sort of ride you after GBN?

S, R, Ss, XT, TT?

GBN
10-29-2011, 01:24 AM
Prefer S or SS but not really fussed. I'm not into analyzing specifications and I can't see myself ever wishing I'd bought the TT instead of the S :)

Basically I want to own a Harley motor in a sportsbike frame, and one of the best examples of western engineering (imho)in recent times.

Hey 2guns, found your YouTube Chanel. Now I'm even more determined to own a Buell :)

C818919 & goodtymej, Thanks for the offers, I'm still digging into the in's and outs of importing to Aus, should know more after a few calls tomorrow - will post the outcome.

For anyone following this with the intention of importing, I stumbled across this site on a Harley forum:

Will do twoguns - keep an eye out for me.

Just had a response from Wayne at Chopaweeza regarding importing a Buell (quick reply, straightforward & knowledgeable - what more could anyone ask for?).
He din't have good news for me - all the companies that can compliance imported Buells are tied up with dealer networks and won't do outside work. That said, I still have a couple of leads to follow up on this week.

Hey guys, I've found an importer that has a '05 Buell XB12s coming in soon. I need to make some more enquiries about it but it looks promising, and I think the price will be reasonable.
Question - What should I be asking about the bike? i.e any common and / or expensive problems that I need to be aware of?
So far I've come up with brake disk thickness & belt condition, anything else that springs to mind?
