View Full Version : sacrificed my pipe

As yall know I run a d&d and while I do love it its stupid loud, wanting something a little quiter I've read every pipe thread I could find and while there are plenty of good mods out there, I liked the voodoo style because
1 sounds good and works
2 simple, no packing or baffles to wear out
3 plumbed almost exactly like a stock XB pipe
http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb443/godzillaxb/40634a59.jpg
So I decided to see what makes our pipes tick. Off comes the 1st chamber(the exhaust tip) I call this the first because its the chamber the exhast dumps into. No suprizes here tons of pics already out there. Onto the 2nd chamber (this is the one everybody modifies) no suprises here either.
http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb443/godzillaxb/c4023956.jpg
Onto the 3rd chamber expecting to find some kind of baffleing or somthing, nothing just more hollow pipes
http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb443/godzillaxb/d86b558e.jpg
From here you can see a 4th chamber, filled with packing, seperated by a perforated steel plate ( in the nose of the pipe) this is what makes the stock pipe so quite, so I opened this up to and removed the packing ( hard to believe how much is in there)

Well the plan now is to put it all back together just like stock (minus the packing) and what I'll have is a "factory voodoo style" pipe.
IF this works like I hope it'll be one of the simplest mods I seen, the bike should run as good or slightly better than stock and have a much nicer exhaust note.
If any ones interested I'll keep u posted, godzilla

+1 from me too! Can't wait to see. Maybe just less packing instead of zero could give it a nice low?
I'd be willing to sacrifice my stocker as well if this seems to be worth it!

Somthing wlse that helps the factory muffler stay quiet is the open chambers at each end op the pipe. In these chambers the Exhaust pulse has room to expand and bounce around helping to reduce the sound levels. While I aplaud your efforts at modifying your own pipe Im willing to bet all you are going to gain is a "tinny" or "metalic" sound to the pipe. If you look at the Voodoo's core replacement it blocks off thses chambers by using elbows. I hope you can prove my lil theory wrong as it would be a very cheap alternitive to a compleat rebuild.
Just out of curiocity.....why cut all the windows in the pipe to see the internals? By cutting the pipe at the rear you should have been able to slide all the guts ( minus the front packing chamber) out the end of the pipe.

Thanks for the replies, and the points, my take 2-3 weeks to get back together,I'm good at tearing up stuff....my son has the welding talent! Between his work and mine not alot garage time left. Freak, you may be right about the tinny sound I was just going by the way the basic airflow is virtually identical in both designs, If so I'll chalk it up to experience. For your next ? you already answered it...curiosity, and I was'nt sure if the jack points were attached to the outer wall.Hopefully it will sound OK and give other buellers a cheap, easy alternative to the aftermarket!

Yes thats the packing that came from the nose of the pipe, quite a bit in there.

I'm interested in the result, as I've been modifying my pipe for some time now, cutting welding testing, and so far nothing pleasure me in some way or other, and the performance is horrible, except the time the bike looked like she had a turbo, only worked past 4000 rpm, and it was brutal, but a no go for me, I like the low to middle range

I have a VooDoo and i have one of those tiny dental mirrors. I have used the mirrors to look inside the pipe to try and figure it out but its not that easy.
Is that very first pick supposed to be a Voodoo?

Hey man im not sure if youre interested but I have a Jardine GP1 pipe on my bike. Its a nice pipe and it sounds good but I would like a louder pipe. Would you be interested in a trade?

brightbuell, yes thats the internal of a voodoo, cant remember where I saw it just screen shot it on my phone. Our buell cans flow the same way except for chambers on each end instead of elbows, thats what sparked my interest in finding why the stock pipes are so quite,it looks like the front elbow just bypasses the packing in the nose, hopefully it'll turn out good, might run and sound like crap, cant wait to see.
poolguy, thanks for the offer but I'll have to pass, dont really want a pipe that has to be repacked.thanks, godzilla

Hey godzilla that's cool but my pipe isn't in any need for a repack, But I did replace the rivets when I got it because I heard about the aluminum rivets being weak so I drilled them out and replaced them with some steel ones. I really like the looks and sound of my pipe its just not loud enough for me... I like to be heard, ya know. I guess I'll just get me a reducer and go with a straight pipe...

poolguy, when I re-read my post I was afraid thats what youd think, I didnt mean to imply your pipe needed a repack, just that they do need one from time to time anyhow glad I didnt offend you!

pipe is done!!!!!! I think it sounds good not near as loud as the d&d, but louder than stock, with a nice deep tone to it, it doesnt have a tinny or metalic sound just a deeper thump than stock. Havent rode it yet( 30s and spittin snow here) but I dont expect any loss in performance. I trying to put sound sound clips here, hope they work.
first the d&d

then my reworked pipe

If it runs out good like I hope were gonna pull the pipe off my sons 12r and do the same to it. not swiss cheese it but just remove the packing from the nose.
buelladdicted I saw in your thread someone answered your ? and it was correct, didnt mean to ignore you. Hope maybe this fairley easy mod will help someone, godzilla

Well, that seemed to work loaded a pic and a vid from the computer instead of the phone. Can,t see the vid but if you click on it(the red x under the word test)it'll take you to my photobucket, there you can see and hear the reworked pipe and the d&d.Gonna try to get a ride in tommorrow if the rain will hold off I'll let yall know how it runs.Just remember if your trying to view from an iphone they dont support flash and it wont work.I think that was the problem cause I was uploading them from my phone, let me know what you think!

I watched it from my iPhone. Sounds good kinda throaty. By the way if you want to watch flash videos from your iPhone download skyfire. It does cost some money but only once. And worth every penny

Got to go for a short ride yesterday, the pipe really suprised me,overall it could stand to be a little louder(or I may just be deaf from the d&d)but you can hear it thumping going down the road. The power delivery is what really suprised me,very smooth & linear,it pulls very hard right from idle all the way up no flat spots or surges, basiclly like the stock pipe only alittle louder and a good bit stouter.Of course this is with a butt dyno, but it does noticeably pull harder.Overall I'm very happy with the results and would'nt hesitate to do it again.I think the increase in power and smoothnees would be worth it even if there was'nt an increase in loudness!
My son's 12r is up next,we'll see how the 12 does with this mod.

What's the non-swiss-cheese basis of this mod? :D
