seen it before. it's atmospheric corrosion as opposed to the bearings rusting from inside out. even if they go bad, all balls has great bearing sets on the cheap.

I have the same "accent" rust. I'm a bit paranoid after reading a few "bad bearing" threads. Is it imperative that we replace this situation pronto?

as i mentioned previously, it's not that all unusual. you are looking at light corrosion buildup on the zinc plated outer shell of the bearing outer race lip. bikes do this all the time. no indication at all that bearings are failing. you will know it if and when your wheel bearings go bad. you can feel and hear it when simply moving bike around in your garage. or jack up each end, spin wheel and grab at 6 and 12 o'clock and wiggle wheel assembly. if you feel slop in the wheel when doing this or hear something any noise in the hub area, then the bearings are failing. if you don't pressure wash your bike the bearings should last a long time.

I wipe a fine layer of grease on the outer surfaces, it keeps them looking nice and repels splashing water.
Mind you it also attracts dust so I wipe often, it keeps me tuned in to the bearings issue.

Thanks for the quick responses. I wanna put red rims on someday. I'll just grease them up and ride until I get the red wheels.

Yes the Bearings do show signs early of rusting as it is sometimes called. The Bearings are Stock wise from Korea. You can find Better Bearing sets, a small dab of grease can help but make sure to wipe that off now and then so the Road grime doesn't stick to the grease. When you get your new rims OR just replace the bearings get better ones than the H/D dealer has. Check your ride and Maintain when needed . A fine Small brass bristle brush will take most of that off before you grease it up.*Jimi

Thanks, I figured I'd get a set of All Balls when I get new wheels. A brass brush is a good idea, I'll give it a try.
