I just bought a buell. So i am what you call a rookie ;). Has anybody encountered why when i try and rev the bike it laggs and shuts off?? I have to slowly rev the bike, when i do that it works just fine. My bro in law told me possibly spark plugs and TPS needs reset. old gas maybe? no clue where to start. Help is needed thanks

cant ever go wrong with fresh gas. How many miles do you have on the bike? Changing the plugs can be a pain in the butt but can improve the performance if they are fouled out. TPS is a life saver for the buell's i do one on mine all the time. But i would start with the TPS and a fresh full tanks of 93 octane.

make sure you let the bike warm up before touching the throttle. These buells are aircooled and need to be warmed up with before riding, otherwise you will foul plugs.

I would start with changing the plugs there is a good DIY video on here.

welcome to the addiction!

4,100 miles i got it for a steal man. The guy did say he had it sitting there for a while thanks for the advice. Very much appreciated.

If I were you I would download the ECM sofware and get an ecm spy cable so you can tune the bike yourself and do the tps reset anyways. That way you can save yourself the time and money of going to harley.

Thanks gtp3800, these bikes are sweet. i let it idle for atleast 10 minutes thinking that it just needed to be warmed up. I am thinking a good tune up should help it.

what I do is I start it, then put all my gear on, then walk it out of the garage, then check my phone, then determine my route, then Ill go. Also for about the first mile ill keep the rpms under 4k. But after that I ride it like I stole it.

They are really amazing bikes. And the addiction will get to you. Soon you will have a list of mods and a hole in your wallet.

all the tips are helpful this is the first actual bike i owned and buells seems like they are particular in some aspects. Soon?? I think i already have :D

Yea they are very unique. Ive never seen a buell like another. Everyone on here has something custome. Everywhere I go people look at it and ask me what the hell it is. The best comment is, "it sounds like a harley on steroids, but looks sooo much more badass!!"

or

"Is your bike broken? it sounds like a harley..."

hahaha my wife said the same thing. She said is there something wrong with it, why is it so loud for a crotch rocket hahahahhaha

droppinlemons, Welcome to the Forum. Before you spend money on the Bike try the 08+ TPS reset/the Key turn Method for the 08+ Buells works really well. Doesn't cost a Thing to Turn the Key!Keeps you out of the Dealer as well.
Erik Buell and his Team came up with this Reset Method so as with the Delphi 3 ECM it was an Improvement over the Previous Version ECMs. The newer Buells won't need more than 3/minutes warm up time in normal weather conditions as LONG as it is a Stock ECM on the Bike. The Proper NGK Spark Plugs # DCPR9EIX are some pretty good plugs for the XB model Engines the Stock plugs will work well also . The Gap is Pre set on NGKs' so only check the Gap with a Wire Gapper not a Solid Gapper.
Most times they are ready to install. The Rear Plug is not too bad to do as long as you are patient . You will need a 3/8 universal swivel, A 3/8 drive Ratchet, A, 5 or 6/inch Extension if you have a 5/8 spark plug socket w/rubber insert that will do the rear plug nicely.A Piece OF 3/8 fuel hose for the Rear plug to install the New one to keep crossthreading or dropping it helps.
The Front plug is easy to do from the Removal of the Left Side Scoop. A 5/8 Combination Box end will do the Plug from behind the scoop in just a few minutes. Be easy on the Plug Wires. And don't overtighten the Plugs. The method of TPS with the Key Turn Method is everywhere on the Forum.
Try stevenc150 links there is plenty of information I and others have POSTED and they were kind enough to Organize it & is on Target for the Maintaining and diagnousing to keep you riding. You will need to Reset the TPS about every 2 to 3 tank fulls of fuel on the 08+ Buells only.
It is really simple and fast done correctly. Theres manuals Top of the Page and some areas still pertain to certain areas of the Bike.
Do Not Use ECM Spys older Version on a 08+ Buell ECM. Theres a newer Version for that. Enjoy your bike its Different than a Foreign Bike. As you get to know your Bike you'll figure it out. Have fun with it. *Jimi [up]

Buells with the air cooled motors have a very heavy crank and fly wheel set up so they don’t like to have the throttle “blipped” like most other bikes do with light cranks. That’s only part of it and I agree with the advice given above.

jimljean hey thanks for that. i will have to try it tomorrow once i get off work. Hey Vanson1200r my bro in law come over the other day and he told me the same thing i really do have to read up on these bikes. Thanks guys i really appreciate the help

BAHAHAHA:D and i thought i was the only one getting the "is you motorcycle broke because it sounds rough". i just shrugged my shoulders and grin while i ride away;)

droppinlemons, welcome to the forum, plenty of good info and advice coming from buell vets.
