View Full Version : 1996 front end conversion
I've got a '96 factory race bike and would like to put a recent model perimeter brake on it. Anyone know what would be required?
I'm guessing it might require a set of recent model forks and a custom triple tree, but since I don't have the measurements on a recent model, I can't tell for sure.

Purpony is one of the guys that has done this conversion on a tuber. 03-04 xb fork tubes will fit into the triple clamps. Then it's pretty straight forward from that.

Ok,
You can use 41mm forks in your stock trees but it will lower the bike and you can't use stock handlebars
Or
You can use xb tripples, counter bore the tip and botton and press in a tuberculosis stem
Hope this helps
Thanks, the bike uses clip ons so the stock bars wouldn't matter.
I'd like to get all the unique features of the Buell line in one bike (oil in swing arm, fuel in frame, underslung shock, muffler under the engine, and 'inside out' brake, but it doesn't seem practical.
What's a turberculosis stem?
Lowering the front end might be a problem. This race bike is pretty darn low already. I figured in anything, using more recent forks would have to be moved up in the triples to avoid altering the bike's geometry.
Guell, would that change maintain the distance between the forks allowing use of the newer wheel, axle, spacer(s) and brake?

Ive done the swap on my X1 as Red93Stang-
Im not exactly sure the diameter of older 96 forks, but my 99 forks are the same diameter as the 03/04 XB forks.
I first had the XB forks in my factory X1 triples. Spacing was fine and the front XB wheel fit perfect, but the XB forks narrow and needed to be slide up farther in the X1 triples to be able to clamp them. This causes the bike to be lowered in the front and the issue of using standard handlebars. Clip ons are no problem..... but the change is handling could be.
So I pressed the X1 stem out and then had to counter bore the bottom side of the XB triple to match the X1 (since the thicknesses are different- if you dont counter bore it, then the X1 stem will be to short), and then counter bore the upper to accept the X1 bolt.... then pressed the X1 stem into the XB triple. This allowed EVERYTHING to fit and work correctly!!
Thanks for the info. I was looking at forks from a CR, but maybe I should stick with the XB series.

You could do the 1125CR but like Pony said you will have to modify the CR triples to make it work. Its all about how much money you want to spend. Good Luck![up]
