My fuel pumps hum just changed pitch and is at least twice as loud. I can hear it over idle. it's a '04 xb12s.
Is this a sign its about to die?
is there something that it might be vibrating against?
If I have to get a new one is there a year that has a better one?
thanks!!

do site search for pump. tons of posts on same. brian gave you the autozone part #. the other # is the walbro pump #. pump located at bottom left rear corner of frame. drain plug right there, simple square bolt pattern, disconnect wire and fuel hose. pulls right out back of frame. a simple evening job. when they get noisy like this in a car they are on the way out--when is anyone's guess but i wouldn't trust it.

Mine does that everytime the gas gets low. Has been for years now.
If its whining, I know I've got about 10 miles before the gas light comes on.
No biggie at all. Just put gas in it when it does it.

Usually the Rear of the Bike can be pulled up and just get enough Clearence to remove the Fuel Pumps housing. Some may need to Remove the Upper Or lower Shock to Swing it out so when you lift the bikes rear up the Swingarm comes down far enough. Make sure to Replace any inner fuel Filter & O'rings OR order them before you start your work. Some of the Bikes can do that noise for a while. Usually the Fuel Filter inside the Frame is in need of Replacement. If you ride a lot on Fumes after your Light comes on the Fuel pump starts to over Heat. The Pump needs to be covered in Fuel to help Cool the pump while in Operation . So when that light comes on find a Station! If you ride long Distances then a new one is Best for less headaches . Good Luck.*Jimi

replace it. when a pumps sound increases it is not pumping as much fuel as it should, when it is pumpng fuel normally the fuel itself actually in a sense muffles the noise of the pump.
