hey I hope that some of you DIY guys out there can help me.
i have build my buell in to a street fighter and have removed the stock speedo and replaces it with a GPS from garmin just to show how fast im going.
for the indicators i have smal ligts(diode) for
- turn signal, left and right
-olie pressur
-lights
-neutral gear

but i havent made one for the fuell indicator
anybody how can help me explane how i can make a diode turn on when my fuell is low.

i got a buell xb9r firebolt from 2003

hope that you can help me out there...

im looking for a lighting tail.. but can find anyone..

still need help for the light..

edit: looking closer it appears to be more difficult that I originally thought. see the diagram below. the y/r wire triggers the low fuel warning. but that rectangle with the arrow represents a variable conductance(like a potentiometer). its almost like it was designed to run an actual fuel gauge instead of just a low warning light. also the y/r is connected to ground so the other side of the light must be connected to positive. im not sure how you could wire that to trigger a light. it would be nice to have the diagram of the instrument cluster.

if anybody got an idee how it can be done it would be nice..

also if it a fuel gauge.

hope someone outthere can help..

hope that somebody can help, its soon time to ride again so could be perfekt to get it fixet soon

Konarider had part of the right diagram. See the Low Fuel Sensor in that diagram? The blk is a common ground, so we need to look at the Y/R (yellow and red) wire. It goes all the way back to the stock speedometer/instrument panel. It's pin 15 on the 39B connector (the one that goes to the speedo).

At this location is where you need to test because I don't know the answer (50/50 shot though). Ideally you'll do the test with full fuel and no fuel. All you're looking for is the resistance through the sensor (ie check for resistance from pin 15 on the speedo connector to ground). This will show you how the potentiometer reacts to full and low fuel conditions.

You'll have to end up giving me that info and I can determine for you how to connect up a light. That's the best I can do right now without giving you three or four different circuit possibilities.

Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner.
Let me know.

Ben K.

Edit: Beautiful bike by the way.

if you do figure out if that potentiometer will work as a full gauge that would be a cool thing to do instead of the light do a full gauge.

There's no telling if the sensor even detects that entire range of the gas tank. My guess is that it does not, so a full gauge will more than likely not work.

To do that you would probably need to take multiple resistance readings with known quantities of fuel in the tank. That'd be pretty easy if you start off empty and then add ~1/4-1/2 gal at a time and take measurements at each step. Then you'd just have to find a gauge to work that with range.

im not in contact with the guy who made the wiring, all the boxes and fuse a move around to make space for the new headlight..

if anybudy could help take a picture of the yellow and red wire from the speedo and a pic. of where it ends..

is it possible that it could be this one?

That's not it - that is a red/yellow wire.

If you take a look at the fuel pump, there's 4 wires coming out of it and there should a connector about 6-8 inches from the pump (wire should be in the "A" slot of the connector). That's where you'll find the yellow with red stripe wire. It will lead to the instrument cluster plug (if you still have it) - pin 15.

Sorry I don't have a pic - but you can't really miss it if you just follow from the fuel pump up.

Regards,
Ben K.

Edit: You should be able to see/feel the connector behind the white tail plastic where the small "vent" opening is.

i found the wire wich was cut, its goes from the tail and into the front up to where the multi stick was( the one there is put into the speedo)

can i connecet a diode to there wire? and then it will light up when the fuel is low?

thanks thanks thanks alot... i am really really happy about the help..

it is a bit irretating that i need to re fuel it every time i need to ride so im sure that i dont run emty

A mileage counter will help out with that if you can get one for the modifications made to your machine. If you have found the correct wire that came from the Original Fuel Cel Light then for now just hook up a small 12 volt 2/amp light to see if it works correctly. If it does then find the correct Indacator/diode then wire it up. Make sure to use a good fused connector maybe a 7.5 TO 10/amps for safety.*Jimi

Hey danish
My understanding of the low fuel light, when I tried to do the same thing you are truing, is that the yellow/red wire connects directly to the instrument cluster and to a “counter” when the fuel is low the light only goes ON when it stays low for a certain amount of time, otherwise is OFF. If no “counter” the diode is constantly blinking
From what I remember the sensor gives a 12v reading but at a very low “power”, I’ve tried a voltmeter reader but the readings were all over the place as the fuel bounce, or so I think???
Hop you can figure it out, I gave up on the idea but would love to know the way to make it working
Go for it [up]
