View Full Version : Finaly got my graphics (Matter decals)

Here are a few picture of my Lightning, made some graphics for the frame and did some airbrush work to the chin fairing and airbox. I've also bead blasted the chrome handlebars so they don't look like they were stolen off an old Schwinn. I made some air deflectors from stainless to keep the heat off my legs. Check out my Big'un exhaust mod. My muffler mod is different than any I have seen, I removed the stock outlet and pipe that connects to the middle pipe. Then I made a loop to connect the two outer pipes so they no longer use the rear chamber. Then I put a 3 1/2" stainless with a inside curled edge outlet in the hole where the original outlet was, only longer and angled up and to the rear. So now it is louder with a nice tone as the rear chamber works like a collector chamber for the outer tube loop, and when the interactive valve opens it dumps the center tube to the collector chamber also. Sounds different than any I have heard with a "badass restrained on a leash" kind of sound, and when the interactive valve opens it deepens the tone.

I always liked the clear plastics but thought it a bit too cheesy.
What you did with the ghost flames under the plastic is genius.

dave_xb12r
09-13-2008, 07:06 PM
It was a .ai file. Matt did a great job fitting it to the frame! Matt did you save that stretched .ai file? or was that done by whoever printed it? If you saved it, could you email it to me?
matter
09-13-2008, 09:18 PM
Actually, the Pegasus graphic is a vinyl decal I made. I manipulated the .ai file I got from dave xb12r over a .jpg photo of the bike and cut it on my vinyl cutting plotter. I could make more and in any color you like, even chrome! They are hi-performance vinyl and would have a backing just like any professional graphic.

Ok, I am thinking $50.00 a pair for the vinyl frame graphics, and that will include shipping to the lower 48. I will also donate 10% of each set back to this board.
This will be for any color you like and I will look into other options like fades, chrome, and diamond plate vinyl. I only use the best vinyl available and the vinyl I use is name brand like Scotch or Gerber and is hi performance cast vinyl and not the cheaper calandered vinyl some use. It will not fade or peel and should last the life of the bike, but can be easily removed with a heat gun if you want to make a change. I am working on some other designs also and will post them as soon as I get a chance. I will try to accommodate any needs or desires anyone wants.
You can e-mail me at

Okay matter I have a question about a custom vinyl...
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/1642_20080928174942_L.jpg
Sort of the theme of my life it is the Greek spelling of Chaos, I used grey as a background color because The Frame is a light grey color. I would like for it to be blue, I was wondering if you would be able to do this and if so how much would it cost? Vinyl for each side of the bike. I won't be able to get them for a month or two but would like to know if you'd be interested in doing this.

FIDOSOL, sure I could work that into a graphic for you. It could be in blue over a matte black Pegasus graphic, or it could be a cut out in the Pegasus or just about anything. I will try to work on a few ideas for you as soon as I get a chance.

Matt- I don't know why, but the Dark gray on your bike seems to me to be the best color (since I also have the Trans Red color). You know, it's subtle, yet very noticeable-- Might just have to get a set of those!
matter
10-17-2008, 04:21 PM
Sure, white, off white, creme or even pink or just about any color you can think of is not a problem and the same price will apply to most.
The samples I posted are on a picture of a bike that I happened to have on file and are to just get general ideas. The ones on my own bike at the top of the thread are matte black and are very subtle but quite noticeable also. A solid dark or even light grey would be nice with any color also. I think with the translucents the colors should either be pretty dark if they are to be the same color as the plastics, or black or grey would go good with those also.
Thanks for the interest, Matt

01-26-2009, 12:14 AM
Matt did the airbrush work for me as well as the frame pegasus', but I don't know what he would charge for airbrushing your particular airbox, just told me depends on how much detail you are looking for. This really looks cool under the translucent covers though. Buell makes an assortment of different airbox covers depending on your model year so designs could be endless. Matt made this appear to be coming from the nipple part outward in skullys and smokey flames at my request. BUELL9

buell9, thanks for the pictures, looks good under the orange!
tf1175, as buell9 stated it really depends on how much detail, but typically I can do an airbox lid for $150+. Makes for a real nice effect with alot of depth under the translucent plastics. As always, it's hard to get the full effect in pictures, very unique!

Matt.
I need a pair of (graphite grey)BUELL decals for the black airbox cover on my XB12Scg.
The standard height of the 'B' in Buell is approx 60mm and this size would do fine.
Do you produce any, if so what will the cost be to supply to the UK.
Please email me

xtremelow, no luck on the grippy tape, sorry. I can come up with carbon fiber, wood grain, chrome, gold leaf, and sparkley metal flake big enough to be on a bass boat, but no grippy tape... If you decide to do regular vinyl, the medium gray looks very nice and subtle on a XB9.
onelogue, I found a couple of oranges that look to be pretty close for your bike. One would be close to the tank graphic and the other looks more like it would match the wheels.

Edit: I see the yellow buell on pg4 but that grey is still a bit to dark for my taste. How about a clear vinyl? Then I know it will be the grey I want.

MATTER, maybe you should talk to BuellXB about possibly offering your vinyls for sale in his shop if he has room and you're interested. Maybe not as an in-stock type deal, more of a must 'order from the warehouse' kind of thing. You seem to be doing a wonderful job, just though I'd toss the idea out there.

Would love a set of stickers from you say maybe in a flat black. Was also interested in a Buell sticker for my truck. Would stick it up in a corner of my tailgate. White would be awesome for that. Have white Seahawks emblem in middle of gate so up in the corner would be the spot...oohh and maybe some little Buell stickers for the f150 emblems on quarter panels. Would place stickers under those or on swing arms, who knows. Excellent work.....glad I found the posts. Look forward to hearing from you. Ride hard be safe.

OK guys, here ya go. Reflective decals are available now. The first picture is in the shop with normal lighting and the reflection from the overhead lights is what the shiny areas are. No camera flash. The second picture is with the lights turned off and with a flash. Of course they will only be THAT bright if you are hit with a camera flash! Anyway, the main drawbacks to the reflective material is they are a LITTLE more difficult to apply as the material is thicker. Should be no big deal. Looks like they are going to run $57 shipped.
Sleez, you get first shot.

http://www.industrialsign.com/Controltac_application.pdf
Here is a link that explains the installation of the reflective material, this is for controltac adhesive and it will say controltac on the paper side of the material if that is what it is. The controltac allows you to reposition if needed. Try the same method with regular adhesive and you will ruin it. That said, I would use a little wetting agent anyway to be safe. It just takes longer.

Yeah, but their reasoning for keeping it dry is to speed production. If you wet it you need to keep it in place for a little while befor you pull the transferpaper from the faceing surface. Like I said, only with the controltac adhesive do you have the option of repositioning the vinyl. Either way the key is patience...

Looks great sleez!! did you try leaving it out in the sun for a day to see if the bubbles go away? Xtremelow was saying that when he installed vinyl, that was his trick

Hey Sleez, let me know if they don't go away. I can always just make one side for you.

hey matt,
they haven't gone away yet. i'll live with it for awhile, i'll let you know if it bothers me too much. they are great. i love when it is near dusk and there are some lights on in the area, the decals start to glow at certain angles, looks cool as hell.
i am sure the effect would be hard to capture in a pic.

You may have to let the decals set out for a couple weeks before you see the bubbles go away, be patient that is and has always been the biggest problem, people dont wait and try to redo it to only have it do the same thing.
If all else fails and you do need to redo the decals spray water(heavy mist) on the frame so you can squeegee out the bubbles as you lay out the decals, and dont need to worry about them sticking as soon as you lay them out.

the second one i did, i used a light mist, it worked much better, wish i would have done a heavier mist, and on both sides...now i know!!

another trick is to use a VERY fine threading needle and poke holes where the bubbles are then with a smooth piece of plastic run it across the graphic to smooth it out, but not tear holes in it. matt sending you an email tomorrow I would also like a set of reflective graphics.

i spent about an hour poking holes and smoothing out, helped a lot, but still only a dent in the amount i got trying to do the one side dry!

Ok Sleez, we just can't have you spending all your time popping bubbles instead of riding! I will send you a replacement, no charge. Which side was it again?

Thanks guys, no problem Sleez. I don't want you to have to park the thing to hide the bad side all the time, imagine the pressure! :D Plus, I gained a couple rep points... cool. It will be a day or two before the next bunch of reflectives go out.
1stxb9r, no problem, send me an e-mail. I should be able to get them out this week with the others.

abiohazard, some sweet vinyl would be a great place to start! I think you will have a hard time finding a better visual bang for the buck, they really set the bike off in person.

Can't tell too clearly from the pictures, but did I lose an "L" on one of those? Bike looks good, but hard to see the white wings in the pictures. I agree, I think you need a new camera! :D

I've ordered a set of the black ones. I can't wait to get them put on. I'm hoping they give it sort of a ghost effect on the dark grey frame.
