Odd problem

Had my xb12 warming up while I was putting my helmet on & it killed. Nothing unusual but when it killed, both the speedo & tach went all the way to the right & back like when you turn the key on. Also my clock reset as well as both my trip meters went to zero but my odometer is fine. I rode for a good bit with no issues, then it happened while going down the road. Only thing that I had changed was my turn signals. I double checked all my connections & everything looks good. Is this a possible problem the ECM or something else?

Just checked em out. Ground was tight as a nuns twat, positive wasn't overly loose but wasn't exactly tight. We will see how she acts at 4am on the way to work.

Check your ECM relay. One of the three gray blocks beside the fuses. Just ran into a similar problem but I had no power to the fuel pump and no check engine light when I first turn the ignition switch on.

I have had a similar problem as well and I just posted a new thread about it. There are many things that could be wrong to make it do this. One thing you might want to do is put a flat washer between the positive terminal screw that goes to the battery and the battery post. This will allow you to really tighten up the screw for the positive with out risking damage to the battery post (since it is made of lead). You may have already done this but remove the screw where the ground hooks to the tail fin. Clean the wire(s) and contact surfaces on all parts including the threads on the screw and the tapped hole in the tail fin using electrical contact cleaner and sand paper if neccessary. If you or someone you know can do a TPS reset you can check to see if any error codes have registered on your computer. Also have you taken off the windscreen in the front and sprayed all the connectors behind that with contact cleaner? Right now I have traced my problem back to an error code that came up during a TPS reset. I think my Bank Angle Sensor is bad. Also it probably sounds obvious but if your bike is fuel injected you might want to try putting half a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in with your next full tank of gas (just cheap and easy insurance).

Well 3 days & 63 miles = no issues. Hopefully it was just that little extra tightening of the positive post. Looks like almost no rain next week, I'll just hafta see. Thanks for your help gentlemen!

matt: for what it's worth there's probably an average of 10 "won't start" "just stalled" "randomly shuts off" posts on the board every month. 90% ends up being a battery or terminal issue.

Thanks Lunatic, starting to realize that my Lighting tries to shake everything off it like a dog when it gets out of the water. I checked a few other bolts & they were a little loose as well. Time to break out the Loctite & good ole safety wire!

yes sir matt. blue and red loctite is a buell owners best friend. LOL
these XB's are extremely smooth at cruising speeds but do shake and twitch at idle and off idle. i've just learned thru the years as part of routine maintenance on them to randomly check fasteners and anything in the battery tray area. guess it's the price we pay for admission. i take comfort in the fact that the british vertical twin owners have been doing the same drill for 60 years.

Purple loctite is my preference.

Clock reset indicates power loss. Trick is to figure out what disconnected between the battery and the ECM. (Battery itself is probably good in this case.)

Question: did reset happen when you put your weight on the seat?

I had figured out what happened thanks to Lunaticfringe back in May. It just happened again is all....I tightened the battery terminals up & never got around to getting them secured with Loctite. Thusly, it happened again[mad]
