Has anyone encountered any problems after adding an exhaust wrap on their headers? I keep hearing mix reviews, it’s good it’s bad, I would appreciate any input. Thanks

it has been used on the race car and motorcycle circuits for about 50+years. It disperses the heat away from the engine somewhat. And some have claimed it does increase HP a little too. I have had mine wrapped for about 20,000 miles now. As soon as I installed it I could tell a huge difference of less heat on my legs. And yes I wear riding pants not shorts.

It worked great for heat protection, but color faded, and when peeled off headers looked like ****.

I agree with Lesley^^. Definitely cuts down on heat on the right leg & IMO they look pretty sick. You can always repaint em too, I usually do every couple thousand miles.

Thanks for the info guys, that pics looks pretty sweet! Was that wrap painted? Did you take off the headers when you put that wrap on too?

I think 0h9bolt has the titanium wrap which doesn't get painted. Not the best picture, but I have the DEI Black wrap on mine with high heat DEI silicon paint. http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/12452_20120525052203_L.jpg

07 bolt is right. It is DEI Titanium, you dont have to wet it, or paint it. 2''x50' is how much I used, wrapped while pipes were on the bike.

So was it a hassle to take off the headers to install the heat wrap?

I didn't have to take mine off. Just pulled off the chin fairing & the small plastic scoop on the right side. Then reached up as far as possible & wrapped from the top down. Used DEI 2"x50' Black Wrap. Wetted it & clamped it down at the ends.

Good luck! All I'd say is be patient & wrap it as tight as possible. Also, incase you hadn't read this already, the wrap will smoke like crazy the first time you fire it up. Definitely post pics when done.

I had mine wrapped for about 10,000 miles. Until the metal zip ties loosened and it fell off. It was great. The heat was cut down a lot. The only thing I didn't like was that it held water. So my headers are somewhat rusty now. When you wash the bike and start it up after. Nothing but steam for quite sometime. When I get some 12 headers I'm getting them ceramic coated. I'm not wrapping them again. But that's just me.

@buellski, I heard about ceramic headers, I thought about doing that too, since my uncle owns a powder coating company, @ 07bolt, thanks for the advice, I would probably freak out and think I did something wrong lol.

oh9bolt, how did you get the wrap to that back head.
Make 2 wraps and put a hose clamp around the wrap and the pipe, tighten the clamp, but not too tight, slide the clamp with the wrap all the way up to the 02 sensor. Remove the seat and there is a spot that you can get a wrench with a swivel head down to tighten the hose clamp. Then start wrapping.

anyone else have issues with rust? Thinking about doing the black wrap on my XB9SX...don't wanna ruin anything though.

When I took off my last wrap which was on there for 5k miles, the pipes had a little discoloring it sanded right out.
I never wash my bike only spray detail and it was rode in the rain twice. Always let the bike run if you just washed it or rode it in rain to burn out the water.

Thanks guys, hey oh9bolt I saw that you have that right scoop on your pic, how is that working out for you? I am looking for one myself to cool off that back head, my fan kicks all the time once I kill the motor.

Nice work alexrz5! How long did it take you? Did you use safety wire or stainless hose clamps? What brand wrap did you use?

It works good, it cools the rear cylinder good, but gives me warm nuts because the amount of hot air that both the scoops catch force all the hot air out of the fan outlet. Im sure others have the same problem but dont notice, or dont say.

I have my XB wrapped black, if riden alot or left in the sun alot the wrap will fade and then you will need to recoat it with DEI HT Silicone Coating Spray .
here is is a great wrap I used you can find it cheap at ebay summit jeggs, oriellys autozone.

Het Matt,
Thanks it took me about 2 hours, I used stainless steel clamps. I used DEI header wrap. then sprayed it with black DEI Hi temp silcon paint. because once I ran the bike, wrap started to fade to a gray color.

Hey Bigtwin,
Do you make those heat shield barriers
Big twin
05-29-2012, 01:14 PM
Yes, did them my self with this ...

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/11609_20120420112805_L.jpg
Had the parts sewed by a dress maker, putting the "welders protective shield" between two layers of the "thermal blanket", so, it did this ...
http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/11609_20120420112719_L.jpg
I put the "chrome" side towards the engine so it would reflect more heat ...

Bigtwin, thats awesome, so did yo take measurements yourself to make it sit right on the bike?
Big twin
05-30-2012, 11:06 PM
Trial and error .... with paper to make the perfect shape and after copied the shape on the good material. Still took me a few times to get it right. After that, took it to the dress maker to have it sewed ...

My bike had been out of commission for a few weeks until today and I noticed what looked like smoke coming from the wrap on the headers. I know it wasn't wet and I'm not sure how old the wrap is but it seems like its getting too old. I can see particles flying away if I wipe my glove down the wrap. No more "smoke" after that one time, but I'm wondering if I should take that wrap off..
