View Full Version : Race ECM vs ECMSpy

I've started to read on ECM and ECMSpy here and now, I'm totaly lost...

I got the Daytona TwinTec "Twin tuner" and it's crap... From what I understand by reading here, it's just changing the signal from the ECM to the injectors and it makes my bike run lean and reduce the lifetime of my engine.

I read a lot of post here speaking of ECMSpy...
my question is, what the hell is an ECMSpy and what is the difference between it and the Race ECM from EBR

Race ECM (http://www.erikbuellracing.com/store/models/xb12/ddfi-2-xb-programmable-ecm-kit.html)

is it correct to say that ECMSpy is just a program you install on a pc and you connect it to your bike and it re-programms your stock ECM to a "Race ECM?

for a guy like me who love his bike, will it worth the shot and pay the 625$ shown on EBR site?

I particullary like the part where they say "not for street use..." is it that true???

I dont like the idea of my bike running lean with this "Twin Tec thing"... oddly connected with wires that I dont understand where they go...
Because, from what I understand again is that the ECMSpy programm is no longer available and hard to find, manage et understand...

thanks guys

ecmspy lets you look at your eeprom and current stats, pull trouble codes and edit values.

you can tune your bike with it and keep track of anything suspicious that it may be doing.

the ecm from ebr is programmed to a specific pipe that they've tuned at the factory.

buying the cable and tuning it yourself for your conditions will give you a more appropriate tune.

talk to max at the tuniversity for tuning help ------>

Ecmspy is great, I'd spend the $50 or so to get the cable, get ecmpsy for free, then burn the race map for free. You'd have the same thing as the preprogrammed ecm, for less, plus all the benefits of ecmspy. And could still custom tune down the road if you wanted to.

So, the stock ECM in my bike is programmable with the SpyECM. the only thing I have to do is to buy the cable, get the SpyECM, get rid of my Daytona Twin thing, get a race map to load in my ECM and do the magic thing with SpyECM, a reset of the TPS and voilĂ*, my bike will get more performance and the lifetime of my engine will be longer?

Are you in the US? I can send you a cd with the program, drivers, and a bunch of maps, and tuning guides/tutorials/etc.

What year is your bike?

yep, '08+ need TunerPro, still free, and a lot more powerful than ECMSpy, definitely go ton the Tuniversity if you are a "Noob"

Newbie question. I have an '03 XB9S with the factory race kit (ECM, pipe, K&N). The bike runs great. Is there anything that I should consider doing with ECMSpy that the factory race ECM shouldn't already be doing?
Thanks

^it's possible to get a better tune than the buell race tune, but you have to know what your doing. I personally use the buell race tune on my bike. I may one day pay someone to dyno tune it. I just don't know enough to do it myself.

refer to the post from xopti made today for the 08+ bikes. They are possible to tune. I'm currently working on it. I just can't get ecmread to work on my computer. otherwise I have maps for the 08+ that I just can't burn.

you dont need ecmread. tunerpro Rt will read/write adjust and ect all in one.

you need:
The tunerpro Rt version install and the pluging from Tunerpro.net.

Next a cable I supply these at 38.00 shipped...

connect to the bike and see what firmware you have in the lower left. Then go to Xoptiinside and get the XDF and ADX files along with ecmspy to get their versions.

I have a setup Video in process its uploading now.

you now have everything to Tune a bike any ecm any year...

I also have a Lite version on the XDF for noobs or those only wanting to do a few things... Personally I use my lite version more than the full version which should be called Pro version.

You don't have to BUY Tunerpro Rt its free. the 24$ is only to remove the splash screen that is 10 seconds long. the free version is 100% the same as the paid version except that screen.

Its free and the files to go with it are free... It will read/write, do tps reset, clear codes and ect...

I am doing the lite version as well on the files so you get only the needed items and its not so full of data you will never need...

I'm totally lost on this stuff as well. I have an 08 XB12Scg, and need it to be tuned. This tunerpro stuff sounds like greek to me everytime I read posts about xdf files and msq....I dont know what any of that stuff is. I'm a mechanic, not a computer programmer.

I understand what it all does, just not how to do it, I'm worried about changing something and kaboom.

Also, I had emailed EBR this morning about their ecm's with some questions about the air fuel ratio they set it to and what the rev limiter is. and this was the response I got about them.

"AFR's are not in any way the whole story. The EBR race ECM's are custom programmed for each exhaust type, with different fuel maps and spark maps. It takes about 12 hours on the dyno plus a lot of riding to optimize these. The rev limiter is the same as stock, because the H-D based motors are very vulnerable to damage if the rpm's are raised."

Seems like they put some time into setting these up for each exhaust.

^^Same here, 08 Scg. DL'd TunerPro full, but every time I dig in my heels to try and sort out all the do's and don'ts, I end up with information overload. I haven't yet connected to the ECM but maybe it'll all come together then. Maybe I'll do what Xopti suggested and DL TunerPro Lite.

Looking forward to examining Xopti's 08+ DDFI3 xdf and adf files.

As many have said before, back up your stock map BEFORE making ANY changes or reflashing.

Hey there guys, i had a question, i have a 2003 Buell XB9R with the factory race setup (dual exhaust, race ecm, and k&n filter) i bought an ECMSPY cable and got the disk with fuel maps and tuning guide on it, i mostly bought it so i could do my own TPS reset but is there anything else that i can do with it to get more performance out of my bike? i definatly dont wanna go in and start changing stuff when i dont know what im doing and screw something up but im curious as to what maps i have in my ecm and etc, since i have the race ecm does it already have the race fuel maps in it? sorry for dumb questions im just kinda in the dark, any light anyone could shed on it for me would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much.

race ecm is the same as race maps, so you already have that. I wouldn't mess with it if you don't know what you're doing. I have a general idea and am still scared to try to tune it. The most I do is burn other maps that I know work to my bike.

Hello,

To start I would appreciate any help. I am having trouble figuring out how to upload the maps from a disk to the onscreen program (ecmspy). It has got to be some sort of oversight. [confused] I can view the map file on the disk via wordpad or notebook and see all the numbers/letters in columns and rows.... Im just not sure how to get them from the disk to the progam...[smirk] Has to be something silly... I appreciate it.

New to the forums.
Looks like I found the great place for some help. I have a 04 xb12s and am looking for the ecmspy and the race map. Is there anyone that could point me into the right direction?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

tallen, got your PM and replied.

03BuellUSA, once ecmspy is open, go to "file", "load eeprom". Make sure to back your eeprom and maps up several times first though. I mean no offense, but doesn't sound like you know what you're doing, I'd be very careful messing around with it...

03BuellUSA

snrusnak,

No offense taken....hahaha. I have a pretty good idea. I am skilled... ;) The problem that im having is that when I click the button to upload race map from the disk file it doesnt. I can explore the file on the disk and see that it has all the pids or number/letter information. Maybe the information that I purchased isnt what its suposed to be and im beating a dead horse here...[smirk] Just thought if it was some kind of oversight? Its not rocket science... Im an automotive technician and deal with computer diagnostics, trouble shooting electrical, and simply reflashing an ecm or bcm all week long isnt a big deal. This should be as easy as that. So I think that the question should have been do you think my disk that I purchased is legit or not since it wont load to the ecmspy software onscreen in the customization screen? Anyway, thank you for your input. Wont take the downing right from the get go personal...hahaha... What do you know about me right.

Still if anyone can please help me with this oversight I would greatly appreciate it. :D

Ok, just wasn't sure, you never know.

So can you connect to your ecm with ecmspy? Obviously if you are trying to load the eeprom then ecmspy is installed on your computer and you can open it. So can you communicate with your ecm?

I'm not sure why it wouldn't load into ecmspy...

Are you trying to load the eeprom or map?

03BuellUSA
06-10-2012, 01:52 AM
Thank you.

I have software already loaded to computer.
Im not worried about downloading to bike just yet.
I really just wanted to open the maps with the ecmspy software... Compare, manipulate, and practice before I loaded anything to my bike so that I can continue tp ride everyday until I figure the complete ins and outs of this software. I have read all the instructions and understand how important tuning is for the longivity and performance of the bike.

I have an 03XB9R that I have welded up some custom stainless exhaust with a K&N breather airbox modified. Runs strong now...you would just have to see it... Just not happy with the Weisco fuel injection programmer. So here I am at the next step.;) I do appreciate any help and don't mind criticism either...hahaha[cool] I just want what everyone wants....

I was wondering if it communicates with the bikes ecm to see if the program seems to be functioning/working.

What exactly happens when you click "file" "load eeprom"? Nothing? Error?

03BuellUSA
06-10-2012, 02:43 AM
I click
file
load map
browse file from disk
ecmspy maps
03 xb9 map race
then when its supposed to open file from disk nothing in the file...
if I explore the file that is on the disk I can see all the information that should be applied to the ecmspy map screen

[confused]

Go to "view". What is selected?(standard, expert, or professional). Standard does not allow you to view maps or eeprom. Expert allows you to view maps but not eeproms. Professional allows you to view all.

Maybe this is your issue.

What exactly do you want to do once you get the maps loaded into ecmspy?

snrusnak
06-10-2012, 02:56 AM
Oh and FYI, even though on the hard drive the file is saved as "map" in the file name, it is likely the eeprom, not the maps. So if you go to "file" "load eeprom" it will probably show up.

snrusnak
06-10-2012, 02:59 AM
Maps are .msq files.
Eeproms are text files I believe. And maybe .epr files also.

I'm going through my files to see what they are. All the maps are .msq. Some eeproms are text files and some are .epr files.

Many eeprom's file names will have "maps" in it. Sort of confusing...

very very interesting....hahahahahahaha:D
I sure wish I had figured this out on my own...hahaha
sometimes you just have to go for the lifeline.
;)
I cant tell you how amazed of how easy that should have been...
I do greatly appreciate your patience and all of your time invested.;)
I will let you know how it runs after my figuring and playing...

Thanks again,
