View Full Version : Broke the tip of my clutch cable! Help!

How can I repair this without replacing the whole damn thing?

A pic might help. Did you shear it completely off? It's not really repairable if so. Really, any damage to them is not repairable, IMO anyway.

the little barrel piece that goes in the lever snapped off, i have a feeling im going to have to replace it

I'm not sure how that piece is attached. But I'd guess replacement...

Maybe you could run the cable through it again and somehow tack it in place.

Sounds like you pushed the mileage/hours on the cable too far.

Yes it broke where most break. Replacement time is at hand. Good Luck

I just found out there are only 4 dealers with a new one in stock in the states as I did the same thing over the weekend. Now there are only 3 dealers left with any stock... They said it could take up to a month if they had to order them from Buell.. (And this was from a Buell friendly dealer)

cable end that you're calling the barrel broke off at clutch lever end? if you find that cable sheared it is not repairable. if you find cable end (barrel)pulled itself off cable you can sometimes remove cable, dig cable end out of lever and silver solder back together for emergency fix but as lesley and sean said, cable is shot. H-D dealers around here have some in stock for lightnings and firebolts.

Yes the cable is best changed out to a new one. Repairing from the Ace Hardware store MAY work for a BIT but will cause more damage that it is worth in the Long Run.
To keep down on broken Cables some [Inox Cable Lube] does a good job. Most Motorcycle Shops have that. Once All is installed new, remove the bolt from the Clutch Lever. carefull with the Clutch Safety Switch at the perch at the pin where it attaches to the perch. Once the Clutch Lever is removed then with the Special needle oiler that you put on the bottle just hold up the Cable and slip the VERY THIN oiler tube into the Cable housing. Squeeze the oil into the cable housing for maybe 25/drops.
Then rehook up the Lever and cable then check it for play and adjust as needed. ALSO make sure that when you remove the Old or Orignal cable to SAVE the O'ring where the cable attaches to the Transmission(Primary) cover just in case.
Another part you need to save is the Cable has an [Metal Sleeve] that is supposed to be on the small lead end of the Clutch cable where it pops into the bottom of Lever where the cable slips into the Lever itself. Unless someone has replaced it before and used a Aftermarket Company.
If you go with the Orignal Equiptment Manufacture(OEM)from American Sportbike.com OR Harley Themselves make sure to see (ASK) if the O'ring and the Metal sleeve that is supposed to be on the NEW one is with your Order.
Hopefully The old one may still be up inside the Lever. The Clutch lever will have the Soft Brass Bushing(where Bolt Goes Through) check the Wear on that so you don't have to worry about that later on. That Inox Cable Lube goes a long way to keeping cables in great shape! Also makes it easier to pull the Lever as well. Good Luck.*Jimi
