So, my first bike was an 01 X1 Lightning. I totaled it into a a deer, and then bought a GSXR 600. I miss the feel/sound of my Buell so much that I've decided to get another one. I found an 04 XB12s on CL, and the guy is willing to trade me for my GSXR. IS there anything I should know about the 04 lightnings? I know my X1 had a leak on the left side of the engine. Do these commonly leak also? Here are some pics of it.

Looks like a decently-modded bike. No "special" issues that im aware of, but like any bike, Make sure the tranny/clutch work ok, there are no leaks, and ask about regular servicing, etc.

I'm not sure on how much cash yet. He didn't give me a number, sooooo. I was thinking $200. Nothing over $400 though.

just a few reasons that may lead you to the 08.
Some changes to the motor.
For 2008 the Thunderstorm 1203 redline is increased to 7100 rpm from 6800 rpm, giving this engine an even broader powerband, and riders the ability to accelerate longer and downshift at a higher rpm. The sustained rpm redline of the Thunderstorm 984 remains 7500 rpm.
For 2008, the following changes have been made to both the Thunderstorm 1203 and the Thunderstorm 984:
New Timing System
The timer cover is eliminated, as the engine is now crank timed from a new crank position sensor, which eliminates the need for manual timing, reducing maintenance costs. The ECM actively monitors and adjusts timing based on driving environment. The new sensor makes 30 reads per revolution, compared to the previous two reads per revolution, for more precise control of fuel mapping and timing to conditions.
More Robust Crankpins
The size of the crankpins is increased to 1.50 inches from 1.25 inches.
Oiling System Upgraded
A higher-output oil pump supports oiling to the new crankpin area. The new pump is driven off of the crank, a design based on the Buell XBRR production racing motorcycle. A new eight-row oil cooler offers enhanced cooling performance. All oil line ends are now equipped with Jiffy-tite fittings.
New DDFI 3 ECM (Engine Control Module)
A new ECM with increased computing capacity. DDFI 3 actively controls and monitors the TPS (throttle position sensor), IAC (idle air control), and timing. DDFI 3 automatically zeros the TPS and adjusts fuel metering for smoother idle, eliminating service intervals and reducing the cost of ownership. A new progressive throttle cam and new throttle cables provide smoother throttle input from stops, and less rotation to full throttle.
Blah, I had an 04 and loved it. From what I've seen, the newer bikes seem to have more issues than the older ones.
Also, the 04 already has a tail chop and a Jardine. Some don't like the Jardine, but I loved mine. You just need to re pack it once in a while. However, the newer bike looks to have some sort of aftermarket exhaust on it.
How many miles on the 04? Lower mileage is definitely something to consider. If you go with the 04, pull those stupid blue light covers off.

Nice bikes!!! I agree with going with an 08...mods are cheap and the 08s are definitely an upgrade from the older years. Doubt ur gonna see lower miles on the 04. Don't forget to look up what they are worth before you buy...I use www.kbb.com.

Looks to be a Jardine also judging by the mounting strap on the rear.

wasnt trying to say pre-08 are bad bikes. I owned one and enjoyed it. However, I'd go 08+ if i did it again..
Easy tps reset, higher redline, more efficient motor.
All about the deal tho.

I love my 04, but I'd go with the 08. Low miles and most likely less wear and tear. My 04 constantly pops into neutral from 2nd gear and I can't seem to fix it or afford to have it repaired. Don't think that's an 04 issue, just due to 24,000 miles I suppose.
