Blast Gear Shift Lever

I bought a 2001 Buell Blast yesterday and put about 20 or so miles on it today. When I went to go for another ride I shifted into first and the gear shift lever was so loose it went way down. I moved it up and down a bit before figuring out why it was moving around and quickly tightened it. After tightening it up I can only reach neutral, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears. When I shift into first the bike kills right away. Anybody have any clue to why this may be occurring or advice on how to address this issue?

Hey Lowdownskating- did you ever figure out your shifting problem? Mine is doing the exact same thing after I tightened my shifter..
