Bought an 06 xb9sx back in June with 1780 on the odo. I've ridden it all summer with the understanding that it had it's 1000 mile service done before I bought it, only to recently learn that it didn't. I've got a little over 4000 on the odo now.
The oil should have been the obvious give away and is why I checked with the local HD.
They had no service on file for the bike, which it would have been done by them.
So my question is, besides changing the oil (which I did) what other things are done on this first service? Would I be able to do them myself, or should I take to the local HD?
Thanks

what you should check and when is listed in the owners manual.
No idea off hand what they recomend...
I would change the primary fluid, check the brakes, check your tires, make sure your electrical conections are tight, check your air filter and make sure are no loose bolts the bike.

Okay
Tires, bolts and filter are good. Check the bolts and tires frquently and just put a K&N air filter in. The primary fluid change out is something I had planned for this weekend.
For the brakes I assume fluid levels need to be checked but do I need to check rotors and pads?
Yeah I screwed up and posted this in the wrong place....meant to post to the main page

check everything, due to engine vibration...belt condition, idler pulley, timing plug, triple clamps- hardware at top and bottom, wheel bearings, tires: wear/pressure, brakes-fluid & pads, cables- clutch/throttle: lube, wheels, battery connections nice n' tight:D any pinched/rubbing/chaffing of cables and or wires, windscreen hardware, etc...follow the torque values listed at the beginning of chapters 2,4,5,6,7 also in Appendices of the service manual. if you don't have one, use the link at the top of the page below the header or you do a google search or ASB for it. also look at the "General Motorcycle Chat" threads on the forum for info, tips, videos, etc... to bring you up to speed on maintenance, good luck

just need to look at your rotors and pads, see if there is any excessive/abnormal wear. Front pads have a kinda short life since it's only one rotor.

and a good quality primary fluid (1 quart capacity) will reward you with smooth shifting and nice clutch feel. consider something like Motul synthese, Bel-Ray gearsaver #80 and Castrol act-evo 20/50 wt.
and check your battery connections for tighness and cleanliness while you're doing your maintenance. other than that and the above, ride it!
