My 04 xb12s started seeming sluggish and almost got to the point where it wouldn't start.
So I put a new yuasa in.
couple days later same thing.
Volts at battery while idle are ~13.9
stator is not grounding at any of three pins.
all 3 pins of stator are pushing ~35 mA at a bit above idle
and I have a current draw of 2.8 MA which according to the SM should be 1.6 mA

could that 2.8mA draw be enough to drain the battery down?

any ideas what to check? all connections are clean and dielectric greased.

Thanks as always guys.

Drax., since you have put in the new battery did you do a Milla amp draw while everything is Turned off with the bike not running?
Is the Engine stalling? Does the Engine when the Battery is charged Start correctly? can you ride the bike with out the Engine stalling? Also if you can hook up the meter AT the battery to the bike Safely please and watch the meter as you ride not going too far from home BE CAREFUL doing that. And watch what is happening.
Do a amp draw while the bike is parked nothing on and you may have to start checking [Wiggle test] and the Plugs Individually on the Harness(Sorry) I know that sucks but may shed some light on the Leakage or Drawing of power.Start from the Front and work to the back.
Once you do the Amperage draw while not running then you can go from there.Start with the simple parts first the Relays to see if one is sticking shut from corrosion. always the small things first. Is the fan when starting to turn on making the jump up in power? just throwing some Ideas your way. Remember to also rethink of any mods on the Electrical you may have done. Might want to test the charging system again and this time Individually do the Stator to see if it is charging properly.
Remember the manuals are here on the forum for you to download or just to read and go by .This type of work CAN get you fustrated so please take your time. Connections all around and hope it is something easy to fix Another thing to try is disconnecting lights and so on to watch the reading on the meter. every few days plug in your Battery Tender and see how long it takes to charge it up. Check all Grounds on the bike, I have had to reground several areas on many makes of vehicles and make extra Grounds sometimes Properly of course cleaning like new and well I'm not there but the Grounds first then Connections then Amp Draw..Good Luck. *Jimi

and I have a current draw of 2.8 MA which according to the SM should be 1.6 mA

thats with the bike off key out of ignition.
No stalling bike starts perfect when battery is properly charged

only mods that have anything to do with electrical are the headlight high beam mod. and I have a shift-i shift light installed but only comes on when the key is on and it's like 8 led's.

everything is stock, stock headlights stock everything.

Individually do the Stator to see if it is charging properly

all 3 pins of stator are pushing ~35 mA at a bit above idle
which is right at spec per SM

Is the battery running down over a couple of days just sitting or is that with some periods of engine running?

If it is the latter then it is possible the charging is intermittent - the 77 connector can be the source of intermittent charging. This is a link to a document I have on Google docs that might help.
77 Connector Check
It can also be the regulator itself and you could rig up a voltage monitor that will let you catch a charging failure but the connector check will only take 10 mins or so.
When I first found this 77 connector issue I had been carrying my multimeter around for two weeks and checked the charging voltage every time I started the bike.
If the stator is producing the 16-20 Volts AC per 1000rpm / phase then it is almost certainly OK - stator failure tends to terminal and not intermittent.

If the battery is running down over a few days without running then you will need to start isolating stuff - 1mA extra drain is very small and not a simple direct short. I will do a test on my Uly today and see how close it is to the spec.

I have the headlight mod done on mine and still only ride with 1 on. With all the electrical issues ive had I just dont trust it. I havent had a dead battery since ive quit running both. I dont know if thats it or one of the other 10 parts I changed trying to chase down the issue. But Im just saying

Draxsonimy, glad that's covered, Yes the 77/cconnector has been a problem many times., you can get the up grade kit just a couple of bucks at American Sport Bike, The Dealer should be able to come up with it also. The drain is small but parked say for 4/days can make for a hard start or not at all.The Delphi connectors in the harness and at the neck of the frame sometimes will rub.
The ecm connector plug and see also if the ECM has a small hairline crack in it. I hope not but needs to be checked. Also how good is the tumbler on the keyswitch?
Its' good then you will need to test for the slow drain with your meter at the battery.and will take several hours testing here and there to see where your drainage is.BTW- how does it charge when the RPMs are at 3'500Rpms OR 4'500/ Rpms? You can also put a meter on the Bike and Start unpluging connections and watching your meter.
.Make sure.checking at the fuse box first key off all fuses and connections Regulator & brake light switches Dash Cluster etc. Unpluging is the only way to see which area is causing the drain.Just for a bit unplug the Shift light say for 2/days and check every day. the drain is small so it is not easy to find cause it isn't a actual short yet..I'll check back soon as I can Good Luck.*Jimi

i am having this same problem on the same 04' 12s. except it has quit on me a few times. and when it doesnt VERY hard starts for a few months now. i also just lost my running tail light. dont know if thats related. have you found a solution? where should i start?

That 2.8mA draw turned out to be 2.8A So im pretty positive my charging system is fine. Trying to find the current draw.
