Speedometer Not Working

went to ride home last night and noticed my speedo wasn't working. when i turn the key the needle jumps like always through the full range of motion so i'm thinking it's the speed sensor? i looked in the manual and the tests seem really involved so i was hoping someone on here might have an easier troubleshooting road to try first.
