View Full Version : My road to headlight

At first I thought the dual headlight looked cool and different but I soon couldn't look her in the eyes. I was hoping led halo would change it but it didn't work out. Here a few pics of my road to my current headlight. Thing is, it's been on the bike for only two days and I want to change it again. I should have gone bigger but do like the halo on my latest headlight.

nice, looks like the Blast set up...how does it look at night and what's the illumination area forward like?

I don't know. The first ride out during day I hit a piece of metal and sliced my rear tire right open. Air was gone within two minutes. Fortunately it happened only half a block from my house. Now I have to fix it before I can experience the light at night

bummer, that sucks, glad you're ok[up]...I was thinking of going with the wave dual light in black, looked like it would have fit just right, but now I'm looking at converting from S to R front end

I could have mounted it lower and there farther in but didn't like the look.
I think it looks fine from the front.

Stock looked best. JMO.
The single would look good though if you could get it to have a nice clean fit.

WOW thats a big headlight haha! I liked the first round mount you did the best. Clean the large mount up and post some more pics from front and side. Probably will look much better with a clean fit

Thanks. I think every lighting set up looked cool (my fav is still the one with the two LEDs)
I ran out of time and had to stop fitting the screen. Thought about removing it completely and clean up all the wiring but want to use my bike the weekend and didn't feel like starting a big project. Would have wanted to install the mini speedo (forgot the name). Would probably look best "naked"
I think the headlight looks even bigger because of the chrome ring.
What large mount? I actually didn't use a mount per se. I took out the bracket that holds the horn and used two existing holes (the ones that give you tool access to the original headlight screws) for the new headlight.
Well, I think I tried many different lighting options and hope it gives others ideas :)

Oh and btw, the smaller headlight is up for sale in case someone wants it :)
Has about ten hours on it

thank you .. it might look better if you could figure out a way to get the fly screen closer to the face of the headlight like it looks on a cyclone or x 1 lightning. but still I like it it's different it's cool

Thanks. Good idea. I could have mounted it lower and made it flush but thought it looked weird. And I already cut my fly screen with the last mod. Didn't feel like buying a new one.
I'll play around a little over the weekend and see what I can do or at least clean it up and fit it.

Some years ago when I first fall in love with a XB I always think when I buy one I will do exactly what you did put a big round headlight but when I finally bought it I kind a got use to the stock lights and i will not change it, still yours is nice but I agree with the previous post if you could push it back to the face of the windshield it would look better

Yes, that's what I was trying but the wire harness is in the way :(
I'll post a pic again when I had a chance to clean it a little

pretty cool with the round headlights. I think the second try looks better. how is it from the side; any shallower of a mount? yeah, post up those photos. I've always liked single round headlights.
Holy crap! I've been ripping through the internet for anyone that has done this! Awesome! I should probably PM, I've been looking into mounting, hoping to get some help with wiring, etc., but have posted about doing this for some time. Looks awesome.
How much modification did you have to do to the bucket to get them mounted?

Maybe try an extended touring fly screen and mount it lower? The headlight sticking out just ruins it in my opinion.

No mods to bucket but I did cut some of the bracket that holds the the ignition, fly screen etc. do t know the correct name. I'll tAke a close up tomorrow.
Yeah, thought about mounting it lower but it looked weird IMO, especially with the big headlight.
I looked at the bike again today when getting stuff out of my garage. It looks definitely better in real than in the pics.
Wiring was easy. I bought those easy connects at RadioShack, look just like the original one. Well, and I must have re-wired my lights (and other bikes) a hundred times :)

Hmm, I wonder how he cleaned up all the wires and connectors. I'd go without fly screen if it didn't look so messy underneath

Doing what buellybagger suggested and decided to build my own screen using fiberglass... I'll keep you posted

And here after getting started on my own fly screen. Using plaster cloth to get the shape. Fiber glass afterwards

Thanks for posting up this latest progress as I had toyed with idea of using a 7" Blast headlight on my CityX and while I've passed on the idea for now I still like the looks and may still go for it at some point.
Yours looks good man.

A couple years ago one of the members here did a custom headlight setup with two smaller lights one on top of the other. I forgot who it was though.

Waiting for weekend to come so I can start with fiberglass...

Well, I kind of had to rush the job a little and need to work on details but here is a first look. Fits well but looks a little "dent-y"

Great for a first timer! I like the way it looks, and I'd rock it too! Just a suggestion in the same vein for your next change, what about one of those LED off-road 7" lights?

Dude... :)
I think I will take a break from headlights and look into tail lights now. Had an led strip (run/brake/turn) on my last bike and loved the look. Want to do the same thing again.
Or fiber glas my own air box cover air scoops like one of these: http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Buell-Firebolt-XB12-XB9/What-are-all-the-aftermarket-Air-box-cover
