Is there a way to change the temperature the cooling fan comes on? Anyway to diagnose/test this? I have an '05 XB9SX

the other night i got caught in some bad traffic...my fan never came on, but I was most definitely experiencing ping and detonation due to the heat when I would take off. When I got to my destination my fan kicked on after my key was off...but it seemed like it should have kicked on in traffic. I never got an engine light or the skip spark mode...just the awful pinging, but the fan never kicked on until I shut the bike off???

Yes, with ECM spy you can modifiy the temps the fan cycles off/on at. I'd wager, you have a problem if the fan never operated at all in traffic. Maybe a temp sensor problem, a grounding problem, or a ECM problem, I'd wager the temp sensor.

Definitely check the fan. See if you have the rear head leaking oil. I wasn't losing oil between my 3000 mile oil changes but my fan stopped working. I removed it and saw my rear head was leaking just a tiny bit but the oil was flinging back into the fan and fried it. It never smelled like burning oil or anything. Hook it up to ECM Spy and run a fan test and see if it turns on.

The thing is, when I shut the bike off the fan DID come on and stayed on for quite a while in the high speed then went to the low speed before it kicked off like normal. That's the confusing part. I guess I'll have to do some investigating on what the sensor is reading, and how hot the engine actually is.
