View Full Version : New LED turn signals-recommended

I just recently installed my new LED turn signals. These things are 5 times brighter and look 10 times better than the stock ones (IMO). They're $34 per set on ebay (so obviously $68 for the 4), heck of a lot less than Rizoma's. I honestly do feel safer knowing these things are so bright. I took some pics & a short vid but since it's still light out it doesn't fully convey the light they throw.

Just putting this out there as a two-thumbs-up mod.

Not too bad. [up]

Where are you at in TX?

I haven't gotten an LED relay. I will freely admit my knowledge of all things electronic is pretty much nil. I did blow my 10a fuse after installing the 2nd pair. I installed a 15a fuse and it hasn't happened again. Yeah, I do know that's not the best fix but so far it hasn't had any negative effects (that I know of) [mad].
What do you recommend relay-wise???

I'm in Austin.

almost positive this will work, somebody should back me up on that or correct me if necessary. But if it does then all you do is swap out your relay. The factory one is located behind the windscreen up at the top above the horn I believe...

Thanks for the link. So to reiterate my ignorance... does this only change the flash rate (which seems fine currently) or does this 'adjust' the current draw so I can go back to the 10a fuse without blowing them???

I also don't understand why I'm blowing fuses if the LED's draw LESS current than stock? [confused]

correct LED's do draw less current than the stock bulbs and that's what causes them to usually blink faster. Your saying that with your LEDs and factory relay the blink normal?? they shouldn't.. Which fuse are you blowing, is there a specific fuse for blinkers, I cant remember of the top of my head. I wouldn't put a higher amperage fuse in though.

Those looks exactly as the Rizoma's I had in my previous bikes. Finally China made the cheap copy of the Italian's. WOW !

You need to use resistors and find negative/positive with multimeter for DC voltage.

Yep, they blink at the same rate as my stock ones did. I don't remember the name/code of the fuse that blew but it's definitely the one that controls the blinkers. I know upping the fuse rate isn't the BEST fix but I still don't have the CORRECT fix so for now...

I have no idea what this means... I know what a multimeter IS but not how to properly use one. I know the difference between AC voltage & DC voltage. The rest is Greek to me.

If anybody can give me step-by-step 'here's the correct fix' advice I'll certainly take it. I'm not a fan of having anything 'rigged' on my bike. I just sort of accidentally painted myself in to a corner of lack of electrical knowledge. Won't be the last time I'm sure.

...maybe I should have given it a 1-1/2 thumbs-up mod...

Ive been looking for some three wire turn signals. No harm in being more visible.

@dannenvance - I realize its an old post, however ... You should have 18-16ga wire for the circuit, so a 15A fuse will be alright. Remember, the fuse protects the wire, not the parts connected.

Also - you didn't have to use a load resistor or an led relay because your LED blinkers use about as much power (actually more due to the blown fuse).

@cb750 - I don't think anyone has every truly committed to wiring up a three wire turn signal, but I do know that I have yet to find a relay for it that replaces the stock one - nor have I found one that keeps the blinker on during normal operation and cycles off/on during signaling. You'd have to come up with your own circuit.

I've heard of three wire siggnals, they'd have two sets of LEDs in them, but they'd also be more expensive. I ended up buying these http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-X-E-marked-15-LED-Indicator-Light-Bulb-Motorcycle-Motorbike-Turn-Signal-BLACK-/330782764140?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d04306c6c&vxp=mtr the ones I bought were four for ~$17 with free shipping. The mounted right up in front, and in the rear since I had a tail chop I needed to drill holes. I'm happy with their brightness, but not the way I had to mount them. (where I drilled holes I mean) I also have these for license plate lights http://www.ebay.com/itm/2pcs-White-1-SMD-5630-LED-Motorcycle-Car-License-Plate-Screw-Bolt-Light-Kit-/271070190062?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f1d0ad9ee&vxp=mtr I put them where the turn signal wires used to come out of the tail, and bolted the license plate right to the plastic undertray.

As to the flasher, I found a post that tells how to modify a stock flasher to use with LEDs. Mine was sealed with some black goop, once I cut it away and opened it up it was different that the one in the picture, but I did the mod anyway and it worked.

I should get a side view, but here is what I started with. You can see how it was jimmy rigged back together with hardware store angle brackets.

Now, much nicer, other than the license plate that is beat up and partly worn off. That happened with the old setup. I'll get a side view later.

I just bought the same pair as Dannenvance. These come with built in resistors. Since they have the built in resistors will the stock relay still need replaced? I just replaced the alternator in my daughter's car and have to return the core so if I need to pick up a relay while I am there it would save me a trip.

the stock relay does not need to be replaced on the buells to install LED lights
here is the pic of the relay opened up and cut the leg on the IC chip as shown

I have fitted those LED indicators Dannenvance. I think they are great for the money and are really bright even in the day. Mriulvr yes you need an LED relay for these I did the chip leg removal as Way has posted but i would recomend using an LED specific relay like this http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_x_5081297-P_x_x?cm_mmc=ACQ-_-Google-_-GPLA-_-5081297&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=5081297&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw&gclid=CL-fufeSqboCFc-Y4AodLXIAXA#utm_source=acq&utm_medium=google&utm_campaign=gpla&utm_content=5081297

You can get relays at auto advance for the led signal light conversion? If so what is the part number?
