So this is the second time this has happened. XB9s with race ecm intake and exhaust. no other mods
about 6 months ago i was riding in heavy rain and one cylinder cut out on my for about a mile of riding and the it ran fine untill today when riding in heavy rain again. it seems that it only cuts out when i am behind a car and getting sprayed with a heavy fine mist. and it is what i assume is one cylinder cutting out. it sounds like my motor is hitting a rev limiter only its at 3500 rpms so i know its not the limiter. and it also looses allmost all power it will maintain speed but i cannot increase speed at all. im not sure where or what to check since it only has happened 2 times and bothe have been in heavy rain. any advice would be helpfull. thanks guys

Check your front cylinder spark plug/plug wire. Might need to replace one or both, or at least use a little dielectric grease. It could also be a short behind your front cowl

i did check behind the cowl and nothing really gets wet back there. also i wash it almost once a week and that water does not affect it it only acts up when im riding in the rain. it almost seems like the fine mist coming off the car in front of me is going in the intake and jacking things up. I really am baffeled on this. its realy wierd.

Do you have the snorkel removed?

snorkel? are you talking about he plasctic thing that goes through the frame on the intake or the breather re route. if so both are stock.nothing is changed motor wise from teh factory accept the race kit

Yes.. The rubber piece that goes from the left scoop through the frame up into the airbox, in 2003-2005 buells
If you follow the directions in the race kit you would remove it, and if the dealer installed the race kit they would have removed it.

Next time you ride in the ran, take off the airbox and check to see if your filter is wet.

i will but will a wet filter cause only one cyl to fire or is what im feeling a studder from the computer jacking up air fuel mixtures due to water being in the air box. it was a monsoon so being able to just pull the airbox off and see if moisture is in it will prove to be difficult. it only does it in heavy rain never happend during sprinkles but only during the biblical rains and yes i am that crazy guy with yellow pants who just rides right on through it. good tires good knowledge on the road and riding exp allow me to do that.

Keep riding when safe to do so - all part of the sport.

Then I wouldn't worry about it.

Riding, we never know when we might get caught in the weather. The problem will only get worse before it gets better. I would take some action as recommended above.

Apparently, it's not much of a problem, I haven't heard anything, if I was a gambling man, I would say you have a bad plug wire, it gets wet and arcs off the plug

i was thinking the same thing . talking to my dad and he said that sometimes on his old trumpet in heavy rain it would build a little puddle near the plug and cause the wire to arc and then only one cyl to fire then when it either ran off or evaporated it was back to normal. im thinking that it might be somthing like that. i bought new plugs today so ill check the wires when im in there doing that. also have new handelbars bar end mirrors and front turn signals along with an all black r tail on its way. many mods this x mas season.
