Hi,
The other day I checked my oil to find that it was full nearly to the top of the oil filler hole, so I drained some oil out. I started the bike, let it cool down and checked it again. This time it was low on the dipstick so i added some.
Then again yesterday, I did an oil change, measured the 2.4 litres that the service manual said to put in, I warmed the bike up for 5 or ten minutes, switched it off, let it rest a few minutes then checked the oil. Again it was nearly overflowing out of the filler. I took it for a ride, came home, let it sit, then checked again. This time it was perfect.
Has anyone come across this before?
The bikes done around 40,000 kms. My only idea is that maybe it has a blocked, or partially blocked oil line which is stopping the oil feed to the motor.

Haha yeah so it would seem. Nah the oil is fine. Smells a bit burnt but other than that it's fine.

if it's any consolation both my lightning and my Uly do this as well. neither of them use any oil nor do they have any oiling problems or blocked lines. i contribute it to "the nature of the beast". i always let the bike sit overnite and check level on sidestand before i start it for a ride...maybe every few weeks or so. sometimes it's up near the threads on the s/arm hole, sometimes down near bottom of stick. i suspect you and i aren't the only ones to experience this.

Did you change the oil with the bike hot? Throwing ideas out

haven't experienced that issue, I check the oil level twice a week, hot...I'd say 5 minutes after shutdown...follow the manual, adapt when necessary, never take away, always add...to the manual that is:D not every manual is perfect, as we've come to find that some of the torque values are extreme in some applications

anyway, I'm almost at 59k on my '03...6-1/2 yrs of grinning from ear to ear:D

A fool-proof method is simply to fill with the manufacturers recommended amount (2.4l) then always be CONSISTENT about how/when you check it.

Because it's a dry sump bike, the oil tank will tend to be fullest immediately after running, then the level will drop as oil slowly trickles back into the sump.

Therefore, always check the oil when hot within a couple minutes of turning the motor off
