Anyone ever have their crank redone?
New OEM? Or rebuilt?
If I went new I'd like the 07+ 1.5" crank bearing if I went rebuilt I'd go full shebang with new pins timken bearing welded pin h beam rods and balanced.
I'm positive my bike has a knock cause it keeps getting worse I'm about to roll over 9000 miles....
Looking for some of your input I'd like a solid foundation for future 1050 big bore kit with cams and head work.....

id be interested in experiences as well, I looked and just the bearings dont seem out of line, Gaskets sets are a tad expensive for Buells compared to the bikes im used to. (vintage Triumphs, BSA, Norton,,, but i know a chick who calls her Triumph "Puddles" so go figure).
I have never rebuilt a modern Buell or Evo sporty motor but will soon on 2 of them this year. But ive built a lot of vintage bike and car engines. It doesnt scare me but i am always open to feedback on the tips and tricks from those who have done one before.
In the old days with Iron head sportys, it was critical to set up the cams right, the trans were critical to get right as they blew up a lot, but the crank assys were a serious issue. You had to have the right special tools and experience. At my old shop we farmed out the crank and rods and then built the rest of the motor.
It took a special fixture and truing them. It was well known back then to see a allegedly rebuilt HD motor with low miles blow up,
It seems the modern ones are easier?
Keep in mind one thing,,,,,,Balancing. never skimp on this. find a good dynamic balance shop and have the balancing done right. I use a guy here in Oregon for all motor builds. EV Lewis Dynamic Balancing, He does airplane propellers and industrial machinery mostly, bike engine balancing as a hobby-side business. Many top builders here in Oregon consider him to be their secret weapon.
To balance an engine correctly, you must balance ALL the parts that spin, so if you change the motor later, you must have the parts carefully re-sized to similar weights and blue printed, or rebalance the motor. A good balancer will keep records of your build ( you should too) and the parts each weighed plus all dimensions. if something needs to be changed, you have to take that into account.
there is a huge difference between dynamic balance and static balance. dont confuse the 2.

Do you have metal flakes in your oil? If your crank is failing, you should have debris in the oil. I did a crank replacement in my 2004 sportster. Crank failure led to debris that ended up seizing up my cams, which seized my pinion gear and caused piston/valve damage. I ended up upgrading to the 08+ xb crank.

Bit the bullet on my 04 XB9S got the 1.5" crank and associated parts to upgrade. Had metal and gold flecks in my oil.
