my 1125r is still leaking! Ive replaced the ignition cover gasket, using a snap-on torque wrench this time tightened it all down in the right order to the proper specs, refilled the bike with 2.8qts of oil, tightened both drainplugs with new crush washers to the exact specs listed. took it for a ride (35 miles) came home, woke up this morning to another puddle under my bike!!! i have no idea whats happening. it looks like its coming out of the very bottom of the stator cover this time. I made sure i lubed up the gasket and that it was in the right spot before tightening it down. I'm really at the end of my rope with this leaky SOB. any suggestions? I must of refilled this thing 8x in the last two months!

* I used two different ignition cover bolts, cause i lost two, but still made sure they were tightened to the same spec.

I drove it too work this morning, let it sit outside for about 45 min, and noticed two drips below the bike, I wiped it off, doesn't seem to be dripping anymore at the moment.

sure, stensg Id be happy too once i get home. like i said it looks like its now coming out of the last bolt on the bottom of the ign. cover, and a drop or two hangs off the left side oil plug, but its clearly coming from above the oil drain plug, and my filter has no oil around it lol. thanks for helping out ill get some pics up as soon as i can.

Here are some pictures, it looks like it cumulates on the drainplug, but doesnt appear to actually be leaking from there, but on the bottom of the stator. i rechecked the torque values of the stator cover. everyone seemed good at 97in per pound.

I just complete some stator work and haven't had any leaks at all. May be that the gasket is not lined up correctly somewhere. Good luck sorting it out.

Hmm sounds like your doing it all right. I've never done the stator gasket does it call for any silicone sealant? If not maybe someone would chime in on if it would be ok to do a thin bead on the engine case and cover and gasket between the beads? Or like allot of the imports just do a silicone bead and no gasket? If you do silicone lay it down on all flat surfaces including all the way around bolt holes, let it its for a few min and firm up a bit before install.

Dumb question but you didn't drop the cover ever or lay the bike on that side? Inspected for very fine cracks? If you pull out back apart look at all bolt holes for and cracking look very close.

Im prety sure no silicone is required. The only thing i can even possible think of is that firebolt is right about the gasket not being lined up properly. becuase before it was leaking out of the upper right of the cover now it appears to be leaking from the bottom. its hard to line it all up when im by myself and dont have a rear stand for it. its possible the gasket fell or got slipped up but i dont think so. its getting expensive having to keep refilling this thing with oil, and its my only mode of transportation at the moment. ugh very frustrating.

yes stensg i did drop it on that side before, maybe if i get around to it soon ill take the cover off again and take a closer look for fine cracks. but like i said its my only wheels at the moment and might have to just ride with the small leak as is for awhile, i cant keep affording to have my bike down and the oil to keep refilling it.

Get a clean catch pan and reuse the oil. I'm sure it would be ok to use a very light film of silicone to hold the gasket in place.

woke up to another bigger spot of oil on the ground about 5" diameter :( its clearly leaking from the bottom of that stupid ign cover. im gonna take it off soon and instead of the 2 guide bolts i have im gonna make guide bolts for every hole, and make 100000000000% sure the gasket is on right, its hard to do by yourself on the side-stand, then ill check the cover itself, i might just end up buying a new cover, just to be sure its perfect.

It does sound like the gasket has slipped. Be careful as even snap on torque wrenches can be off. Especially if you dont zero them out for storage. If you are not sure about cracks and you have an aviation maintenance facility near bye they should be able to do a NDI inspection for you and i dont think they would charge you a lot.

im gonna try tightening that one bolt up a little just to see if the leak stops, and then I guess Ill be draining her...again lol. We have a small airport MNT facility in town and I have connections over there. what exactly is a NDI inspection?

nondestructive inspection they will do x-rays or a sonogram to check for fractures

More than likely a dye penetrant. you spray dye on and a developer and then look at it under a black light. A crack will show up a darker color. No need to removed paint or anything and it wipes right off after.
