I just reached my first 1K miles on my XB12ss and need to get the first check up done. I'm trying to avoid taking it to the HD shop and have them charge a arm and a leg just to change my oil and say that everything is ok! What all need to be checked? The bike runs fine but I want to make sure everything is ok! So what are the major things to check?

When should I check the trans oil and belt? And at what miles should I change the belt?

at 1K i would change the engine oil, primary oil, and oil filter. look at my posts for list of inexpensive cross-reference oil filters. amsoil 20-50 works wonderfully in the primary. any quality 20-50 oil is fine for the motor. the synthetics work great such as amsoil, castrol act-evo....the list is long. the drive belt does not need checking at 1K miles. it is automatically tensioned. i have seen them last 40K miles on a few Buells and even longer on H-D sportsters and big twins. do the work yourself and if you don't feel comfortable doing it get a competent bike mechanic to assist you along with reading your owners manual.

I agree that the belt is generally maintenance free for 10's of thousands of miles or kilometers, and that tension does not require any inspection per se, but I still check it regularly for damage anyway. You never know when you're going to pick up a stone, especially folks who have removed their guards...
