So after about 10 years of wanting one of these bikes I finally pulled the trigger on an '05 XB12S completely stock with 8500 miles for $5000

I don't know a whole lot about these bikes but I am well versed in the bike wrenching area, my other bike is a 2000 GSXR 750 which I bought wrecked and rebuilt, most of my experience is based around the jap bikes but I am truly loving my new buell!! I find myself fussing over quite a bit but not really knowing exactly what I'm doing...

...I've been reading as much as I can here and think I have the oil changes and primary chain adjustments figured out...Im really trying to learn as much as I can about caring for my new ride so I can get many many glorious miles out of her

Is there anything in particular I should pay special attention to on the 2005? Thanks in advance...

sounds like a nice machine. as with any other used bike that is "new" to you, give it a pre-flight check including fluid levels, clutch cable and both throttle cable adjustments, tire pressures, and visual inspection. then take it for a 10 mile easy ride and see how it feels, see what you have. then do one more visual inspection for leaks, belt condition, tightness of fasteners, condition of brake pads and rotors....everything you feel comfortable with checking and adjusting yourself. one of the many beauties of Buell XB's is their simplicity of maintenance.

Awesome! Thank you, I've been checking it over regularly and everything seems great so far, I'm not sure what to look for on the belt but it seems in great condition

The one thing I'm having a hard time getting use to is the engine noise of the V twin, they seem to be much noisier than the inline 4 that I'm use to...I did pull the exhaust and did the mod that I read about here, that gave it a little better exhaust note and drowned out some of the V twins noises

The bike runs like new overall and like I said completely stock, I can't see anything that has ever been messed with

I do have a noob question about the airbox, there is a cable running to a box with some wires plugged into it that sits right on top of the airbox lid...what is it? I'm sorry the bike didn't come with the manual

first thing you need to do is go online, buy the FACTORY workshop manual, THEN buy the FACTORY parts manual., the owners manuals are nice too but not as important. but that parts book will tell you what every part is,where it goes and how they fit together (very important when working on it) as well as the correct part numbers.
Ive gotten some on feebay.,, some Amazon, some places have them in downloadable form and you can take to a print shop and put in a 3 ring binder, but hard to beat the factory printed ones.
Id second the whole preflight routine, i know many people who get excited,,,,,, and blow something up because the DPO (Dreaded Previous Owner) left it low on fluids or forgot to tell you about the clutch center nut was only on finger tight.
Long list of easy mods to do that improve performance,, not going to try and cover them all here right now... i spent a lot of time reading topics on here and other forums plus asking others,,,, you can get up to speed quick...
But where in Or-y-gone are you sparky? Im not far from PDX,, near Oregon city up in the hills, have multiple Buells, sportsters, and lots of vintage bikes,, some of them actually run. (Serial bike hoarder)
But.....drumroll please!!!!!!!!!:);):p[smirk][up]:D

Your timing is perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to personally invite you to my motorcycle show and swap meet this very weekend on July 20th. I put on events thru the year,,,, but this is a big one for me. July 20th, Saturday. and just for you sparky,, we are having a special show in ADDITION to the vintage bike show is our "Western US Buell meet" also known as the "Orphan Bike show" meaning a special show for bikes, vintage or modern, that are from a manuf thats no longer in business such as Buell, Cagiva, Indian, Henderson, bridgestone, Hodaka. etc etc..

Fabulous prizes, plus models dressed up in 1940s pinup style. food, 14 museums on site, kids coloring contest, and my wifes famous chocolate cookies.

see www.nwcarandcycle.com or look up the parent organizations website at
www.Antiquepowerland,com as theres 14 museums on site.

We are also hosting members of the BMW club as they are having their NATIONAL BMW owners convention and rally nearby,, over 6000 BMW owners are here in Oregon for their event. We are having a tour for them and picnic on friday,, and expect a lot of them on site Saturday.

PM me for more info or look on the events page for our museum for my contact info.
Doug the internet annoyance. Theres also Doug "Admiral" Nelson,, which is a different Doug, Im the more handsome one.

cheers,,,,,,and hope to see you saturday, (Im picking up the trophys tommorrow... maybe one will be yours?)

and,,, shameless,, plug, not required, but i can ALWAYS use help at these events, its easy and fun, but like any non profit, we depend on volunteers.

Whiplash! Good to see you here amigo. Great group of Buellers and tons of info on the site. Welcome and congrats again on the bike!

Thanks for the offer annoyance but I'll be camping with the fam, I actually bought the bike from PDX Auto Imports LLC just across Tom Ikea, they also had a sweet 2009 XB9s that was just $1000 out of reach for me....twr might have seen it

I been hanging around here for awhile stopping by to get my buell fix but now I have one of my own, its nice to know you guys are close by, we'll have to try to get a ride going someday

Yeah,, those guys snap up the good ones, im not 100% certain if yours is the same one,,,,,but there was a couple last winter on the local CL for good prices and they went quick. within a week PDX imports had new bikes. I never confirmed but im pretty sure.

Well i hope it works out for you. take your family camping at OUR event at the museum! it will be fun,,,,,,,theres a railroad and trolleys the kids can ride on, plus a minature railroad as well,.

if not,,,,,,,,another time, I tried,[cool]

It sounds like alot of fun bro! But we already have reservations, but I'll do my best to hit the next one I promise! I really want to start hitting some of these bike events, the kids are finally old enough for me and the wife to sneek away or bring em with and turn em loose on y'all, lol

There was another one like mine on CL for the same price but the guy said it had been down and had some road rash, he had to replace the bars and a couple other things, it was a nice bike but for the same price PDX had the better buy, the XB9 they had would have been mine but I couldn't get em down to my price range, it was a sweet bike!

All unattended children will be given a triple shot Carmelizer Espresso from Dutch Brothers and a puppy.

Nah,, just joking. We actually have kids activitys there. theres a kids coloring contest with awards, plus all supplys are provided, and choices of rat rods with monsters, choppers,, or traditional hot rods and classics. Usually i have extras to send home with them too.

You make a perfect example, A guy says,,,oh the wife and kids have plans, I cant go, and i work hard to eliminate that excuse as we try to put on stuff that makes it work to bring them along. Tell your wife we have a vendor who makes speciality hand crafted Chocolates.

if you cant make it to this one,,,,,,,, consider taking the whole herd to the great Western Steamup, its 2 weeks long. see www.antiquepowerland.com Ill likely take my nephews down the first weekend, and I think i have to work the show the second weekend. Its a huge show, All the museums are open, and tons of food vendors and
swap meet, plus activitys, see schedule as theres different stuff each day.

I'll work on my profile and location tonight, I only use my phone for keeping up with my forums so I'll probably have to post links to my pics hope that'll work, and thanks for the welcome :) I'm very glad to be here and was pleasantly suprised at how many buell owners were so close to me, thanks again,

whip

Well We had the show, Mixed bag, Overall we had a good event, and the people that attended overwhelmingly said they had a great time. We raised some money for the museum and introduced a lot of people to the facilty who had never attended or knew about it.
Sadly it wasnt the huge crowd i hoped for,,,,,we just have too many competing events in July which is why next year it will be in mid September, still good weather but less competing events.
Id have to count the entrys but the vintage bike show had about 40 bikes over the day,, some came and went and didnt stay the whole day. Of the orphan bike show,,,,,,, we need to work on that. [confused], we only had 2 bikes in that, both buells, one a forum member here (Good to meet you BTW and hoped you had a good time) and a local guy who has a Tuber, a 1997 lightning. He said his wife has one too.. a XB. But she wasnt there.

We only had one model show up but she is a hottie. she handed out trophys and helped with the show, We have many many pix of her and she posed with both bikes. Will work on posting later this week .

There was some confusion, another lister, Squidbuellie came up here, but didnt come to the show.. but i met up with him Sunday, bought lunch and beers, and gave him the grand tour of my MC collection (Hoarding) and took him for a scenic tour of the area. He brought up his old bike which i bought, and some buell parts from California he picked up for me and delivered. Good guy.:D:D:eek::D:D:D:D:D:D:):)

Hey all, I didn't want to start a new thread for something that's probably been covered 1000 times so can some one point me to a thread where I can soak up some info on 12s drive belts? Thanks

Smart move not asking the same questions over and over, just do a web search OR forum search with different wording, keep in mind a comma is a command function in searches for example

"Drive belt, Buell XB" or "Buell, XB12, Drive belt". this brings up different topics and searches. mostly forums,

also consider using Sportster forums, you often get more hands on gear heads who do more rebuilds and teardowns where Buells see more bolt on and tuning.
